Questions Relating to the Topic of Function

Determine if the following relations are functions and find their domain and range:

(i) f = {(2, 4), (3, 5), (2, 6)}

(ii) g = {(1, 2), (2, 3), (3, 4)}

Solution:

For relation (i): The element 2 has two images (4 and 6). Therefore, f is not a function.

Domain: {2, 3}

Range: {4, 6}

For relation (ii): Each first element has a unique image. Therefore, g is a function.

Domain: {1, 2, 3}

Range: {2, 3, 4}

Find the inverse of the function f(x) = x + 5.

Solution: To find the inverse:

Set y = f(x) → y = x + 5

Solve for x: x = y - 5 Thus, the inverse function is f⁻¹(y) = y - 5.

Identify whether the following functions are one-one or onto:

h(x) = x^2 for all real numbers.

Solution:

h(x) is not one-one because both positive and negative values of x yield the same output.

h(x) is not onto since there are no real numbers that map to negative outputs.
Therefore, h(x) is neither one-one nor onto.

Calculate the domain and range of f(x) = √(x-1).

Solution: The expression under the square root must be non-negative:

x - 1 ≥ 0 → x ≥ 1 Thus,

Domain: [1, ∞)

The output will always be non-negative:

Range: [0, ∞)

Given two functions f(x) = x^3 and g(x) = x + 1, find (f o g)(x).

Solution: To find the composition: (f o g)(x) = f(g(x))

= f(x + 1)

= (x + 1)^3

Thus, (f o g)(x) = (x + 1)^3.

Show that the function k(x) defined by k(x) = |x| is not differentiable at x=0.

Solution: The left-hand derivative at x=0 approaches -1 while the right-hand derivative approaches +1.
Since these two limits do not equal each other, therefore k(x) is not differentiable at x=0.

If m(n) = n^2 + n for n in natural numbers N, show that m is a many-one function.

Solution: For example: m(1)=2 and m(2)=6 but m(-1)=0 which shows multiple inputs can lead to same
outputs thus confirming that it’s a many-one function.
Find the value of f(3), where f(x)=4x-7.

Solution: Substitute into the equation: f(3)=4(3)-7=12-7=5.

Thus, f(3)=5.

Determine if p(q(r)) equals q(p(r)). If p(r)=r+2 and q(r)=r^2 then what are p(q(r)) and q(p(r))?

Solution: Calculate p(q(r)): p(q(r))=p(r^2)=r^2+2.

Now calculate q(p(r)): q(p(r))=q(r+2)=(r+2)^2=r^2+4r+4.

Since r^2+2 does not equal r^2+4r+4, therefore they are not equal.

What is the range of f(x)=sin(x)?

Solution: The sine function oscillates between −1 and +1 for all real numbers, hence its range is [-1, +1].
