Practice Chapter 9: Kinetic Theory of Gases.

Answer all questions.
(1 Hour 30 Minutes)
[36 Marks]

1. (a) Describe degree of freedom in a gas. [2 Marks]

(b) Using the principle of equipartition of an energy, derive an expression for the kinetic
energy k, in terms of temperature, T and degree of freedom f of a gas containing N
molecule. [3 Marks]
(c) Nitrogen gas of 3.0 moles is kept in a fixed container at a temperature of 100 K. It is then
heated to a temperature of 600 K. Determine the change in internal energy of the gas.
[3 Marks]

2. (a) State two assumptions of the kinetic theory for an ideal gas. [2 Marks]
(b) (i) What is meant by the internal energy of an ideal gas? [1 Mark]
(ii) State two factors which effects the internal energy of an ideal gas. [2 Marks]

3. A cylinder contains 0.25 mol of oxygen gas at temperature of 27 °C. Assume oxygen gas as an
ideal gas.
[Molar mass of oxygen is 32 gmol-1.]
(a) State two differences between an ideal gas and a real gas in terms of molecules.[2 Marks]
(b) Determine the mean translational kinetic energy of the gas molecules. [2 Marks]
(c) Calculate the internal energy of gas. [3 Marks]

4. (a) (i) State two assumptions of an ideal gas. [2 Marks]

(ii) State the physical condition under which a gas behaves as an ideal gas. [1 Mark]
(iii) A 0.35 m3 gas tank contains 7.0 kg of butane gas. Assuming that the gas behave as an
ideal gas, calculate its pressure at 27 °C.
[Molecular mass of butane is 58 gmol-1] [3 Marks]
(iv) Butane gas normally behaves as a real gas. The actual pressure of the butane gas is
higher than the calculated values in (a) (iii). Give a reason. [2 Marks]

(b) (i) What is meant by degrees of freedom af a gas molecule? [2 Marks]

(ii) Write an expression relating the total kinetic energy E of a gas molecule to the number
of degrees of freedom f. Explain any other symbols used. [3 Marks]
(iii) The escape velocity from Mars is 5.0 x 103 ms-1. If the temperature of Mars is 300 K,
determine whether oxygen gas can exist on the planet.
[Molecular mass of oxygen is 32 gmol-1] [3 Marks]
