Assignment 5(Easy)

Student Name Due Date

Part1: Gradient

1. Two points

1) The line joining (3, −¿4) to (−¿g, 2g) has gradient -3. Work out
the value of g.
2) Find the equation of the line l which passes through the points A
(7, 2) and B (9, -8). Give your answer in the form
ax +by + c=0.

2. The gradient and one point

3) Find the equation of the line with gradient m that passes through
−2
the point ( x 1 , y 1) when: m= and ( x 1 , y 1 ) =¿ (-6, -1)

3. The point of intersection for a pair of straight lines

4) The lines y=4 x−10 and y=x −1 intersect at the point T. Find the
−2
equation of the line with gradient that passes through the
3
point T. Write your answer in the form ax +by + c=0, where a, b and
c are integers.
Part 2: Parallel and Perpendicular Gradients

1. Parallel

1) The line r passes through the points (1, 4) and (6, 8) and the line s passes through
the points (5, -3) and (20, 9). Show that the lines r and s are parallel.
2) A line is parallel to the line 3x + 6y + 11 = 0 and its intercept on

the y-axis is (0, 7). Write down the equation of the line.

2. Perpendicular

3) A line is perpendicular to the line 3 x+ 8 y−11=0 and passes

through the point (0, -8). Find an equation of the line.

4) Find an equation of the line that passes through the point (5, -5)

2
and is perpendicular to the line y= x +5 . Write your answer in the
3

form ax +by + c=0, where a, b and c are integers.

Part 3: Length and Area Problems

1) The distance between the points (−1 ,13 ) and (x , 9) is √ 65. Find two
possible values of x.

2) The vertices of a triangle are A (2, 7), B (5, −6 ) and C (8, −6 ).

a) Show that the triangle is a scalene triangle.

b) Find the area of the triangle ABC.

3) The straight line l 1 has equation 4 x−5 y−10=0 and intersects the

x-axis at the point A. The straight line l 2 has equation

4 x−2 y+ 20=0 and intersects the x-axis at the point B.
