POWER PLANT DESIGN (LEC/LAB) 1ST SEM SY 2024-25/ OCT 2024

LAB EXERCISE – 7 (SET A)

PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF STEAM POWER PLANT
(STEAM TURBINES AND STEAM GENERATORS)

INSTRUCTIONS: Write your full solution on a separate sheet. Provide necessary diagrams.

TOTAL SCORE: 100 POINTS

PROBLEMS:

1. A steam turbine receives steam at a rate of 125 MTPH at 4 MPa and 5200C where its
condensate leaves at 32oC. Considering indicated turbine, generator and mechanical
efficiencies of 92%, 90% and 88%, respectively, determine:
(a) the rated electrical power output of the turbine, in MW,
(b) the combined thermal efficiency of the turbine, in %,
(c) the combined efficiency of the turbine, in %,
(d) the rated brake power output of the turbine, in MW,
(e) the brake thermal efficiency of the turbine, in %,
(f) the brake efficiency of the turbine, in %,

2. A steam turbine generator unit consumes 75 MTPH of steam at 1.2 MPa and 3250C where its
condensate leaves at 220C. For a brake steam rate of 4.25 kg/kWh and generator efficiency
of 97%, calculate (a) the brake thermal efficiency, (b) the generator output, in MW, and (c)
the combined engine efficiency of the unit.

3. Determine the thermal efficiency of a coal-fired boiler when it consumes 52 kg/hr of coal and
generates 5.42 kg/hr of steam at 7 bar with 91% dryness from feed water supplied at 40 oC.
The coal has a composition of 90% carbon, 3.3% hydrogen, 3% oxygen, 0.8% nitrogen. 0.9%
sulphur and 2% ash, by mass.

PROBLEMS:

1. A steam turbine receives steam at a rate of 75 MTPH at 2 MPa and 5000C and exhausts it at
0.10 MPa. Considering indicated turbine, generator and mechanical efficiencies of 95%, 93%
and 90%, respectively, determine:
(a) the rated electrical power output of the turbine, in MW,
(b) the combined thermal efficiency of the turbine, in %,
(c) the combined efficiency of the turbine, in %,
(d) the rated brake power output of the turbine, in MW,
(e) the brake thermal efficiency of the turbine, in %,
(f) the brake efficiency of the turbine, in %,

2. A steam turbine generator unit consumes 125 MTPH of steam at 5 MPa and 4000C and
exhausts it to 40 kPa. For a brake steam rate of 4.5 kg/kWh and a generator efficiency of 95%,
calculate (a) the brake thermal efficiency, (b) the generator output, in MW, and (c) the
combined engine efficiency of the unit.

3. During the boiler trial for 24 hours, 70 tons of saturated steam is generated at 16 bar (h =
2793 kJ/kg) from feedwater at 27oC (h = 113 kJ/kg) while consuming 10 tons of coal with a
gravimetric analysis of 66% C, 5.9% H2, 1% S, 19.9% O2, 1.5% N2, and 5.6% ash. Calculate
the efficiency of the boiler.
