I have been employed by the company Mondelez International. The owner of one of the most
popular cookie brands called Oreo. Oreos are a cream filled cookie with 2 biscuits, one at the top
and one at the bottom.
Oreos have the problem of constantly breaking and crumbling up in the thin plastic packets. A
survey taken by 3877 people says that most of their Oreos were broken.
I have decided to change it so that the boxes are of a hexagonal shape and have a lid which can be
opened. Having a box will not only protect the Oreos but will also look better. Each layer will have a
total of 7 biscuits. After each layer there will be a lid of card paper which can be pulled to take out
more biscuits. My target audience are children from ages 5 – 13 as they are the ones who consume
the cookies the most. My client is Mondelez International (owner of Oreo).
iii. Analyze a range of existing products that inspire a solution to the problem.
Task 4 on PPT: Choose two existing pieces of packaging and analyse them using the words in
ACCESSFM. You can choose to structure this in either of the ways I have shown you. Full sentences
are expected. 2 pages max, font size 11 to be used.
Aesthetics:
Oreo's packaging is iconic, with its bold blue background. The white font contrasts
with the blue background very well. The cookie images give the customers a brief
idea of how the product looks. Alongside the cookie, there is a picture of milk,
which tells the users that it tastes the best with milk, it also tells them that the
crème is rich in milk. It also reinforces the "Twist, Lick, Dunk" theme. There is also
a color other than blue which tells the user about how the biscuit tastes, for
example, brown usually means chocolate. The design appeals to all ages,
conveying indulgence while maintaining brand consistency.
Customer:
Their customers are mainly kids and parents. This is because kids like the crème
filling and the biscuit itself. The kids also get attracted to colors such as blue, pink
and yellow. This is because, these colors are usually small kids’(5-8) favorite and
these are one of the most visually appealing colors to our eyes. It has also tried to
move to a different audience such as middle aged working people by collaborating
in industries such as fast food with McDonalds and also with companies such as
Starbucks.
Cost:
Oreo packaging uses cost-effective materials like plastic and foil to keep
production costs low and preserve freshness. During my research I found out that
the product costs anywhere from 4 AED to 7 AED in the local supermarkets. The
product packaging is roughly 10% of the retail price which is 0.55 AED.
Environment:
The packet is mostly made of plastic which is not eco-friendly. It is also very hard to
decompose which pollutes the environment. Although other companies have switched to
different materials, Oreo hasn’t really given this any thought.
Safety:
Oreo packaging prioritizes consumer safety by avoiding sharp edges and harmful materials. It
protects the cookies from contaminants and moisture, ensuring freshness from production to
consumption. The food-grade materials used prevent any health risk.
Size:
Oreo offers various package sizes, from single serve to family packs, catering to different
consumer needs. This flexibility allows consumers to choose the right amount for personal
snacking or group sharing while being practical for retail and transportation.
Function:
The primary function of Oreo packaging is to keep the cookies fresh and protected. The use of
airtight seals prevents moisture from affecting the texture of the biscuit, and the packaging’s
sturdiness helps prevent the cookies from breaking. But after opening the packet this feature
become useless. However the packaging does not keep the cookies fresh, and they cookies are
easily broken. Hence their effort is useless.
Material:
Oreo packaging is typically made of plastic and foil, materials known for their ability to
preserve freshness by providing a moisture barrier. These materials are also lightweight and
durable, making them suitable for mass production and long shelf life. However, they are not
eco-friendly, as they are difficult to recycle, contributing to environmental waste.
Point Description
Aesthetics It is a brown box which is circular in shape. It is very plain and simple and
can be used to store everyday things. It is made of brown cardboard,
which gives it a rustic and natural look. The round lid perfectly fits on the
box.
Customer The customers could be anyone and from any age. This could be useful to
everyone. Kids could use this to store their UNO cards, ladies could use
this to keep their makeup accessories etc.
Cost Since it is made of cardboard, the cost of production should be low. This
would make it an affordable packaging option, especially for items that
require eco-friendly, lightweight packaging.
