Artificial Intelligence (AI) can be a powerful tool in the classroom, especially when learning English. AI
technology is becoming increasingly popular among students as a way to improve their English language
skills and deepen their understanding of the language.
AI can be used to help students with a variety of tasks, such as pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and
even reading comprehension. It can also help students learn new words and phrases, practice speaking,
and better understand colloquialisms. By utilizing AI, students can become more engaged with the
language and have an improved learning experience.
AI can also be used to help students practice conversational English by providing them with interactive
chatbots. These chatbots can ask questions, give feedback, and provide guidance on topics like grammar
and pronunciation. Furthermore, some AI-powered apps provide real-time corrections for students’
speech and writing. This can help students become more self-aware of their mistakes and help them
learn from them more quickly.

One of the key uses of GenAI in higher education is for enhancing students’ learning experience through
its ability to respond to user prompts to generate highly original output.
For example, the study found that students perceive GenAI technologies as beneficial for providing
personalized learning support as they expect learning resources tailored to their needs 24/7. In terms of
writing and brainstorming support, students want feedback to improve writing skills, beyond just
grammar checking and brainstorming, similar to the findings in Atalas’ study (2023).
Another opportunity in which GenAI can bring benefits is learning assessment (Crompton & Burke,
2023).
Tools such as the Intelligent Essay Assessor are used to grade students’ written work and provide
feedback on their performance (Landauer, 2003).
Mizumoto and Eguchi (2023) examined the reliability and accuracy of ChatGPT as an automated essay
scoring tool, and the results show that ChatGPT shortened the time needed for grading, ensured
consistency in scoring, and was able to provide immediate scores and feedback on students’ writing
skills.

For instance, in a study by Shivakumaret al. (2019) in a higher education setting, learners were provided
with an AI coach that tailored instruction to each learner’s learning patterns and needs, resulting in the
ability to speak more fluently using consistently accurate language structures.
For instance, a study by Dizon and Gayed (2021) in higher education found that learners using the AI-
powered tool Grammarly made fewer grammatical errors and wrote with more lexical variation than
learners who did not.
Xu et al. (2022) examined the effects of AI-assisted language learning on English language learner speech
and interaction. The findings indicated that the AI-assisted language learning tool using a speech
recognition feature improved the learners’ language learning achievement and engaged them in
interactive language learning activities.
Zheng et al. (2021) carried out a meta-analysis of the impact of AI on learning achievement and learning
perception. Twenty-four papers, including 2,908 participants, from 2001 to 2020 were analyzed.
Ali et al. (2023) explored the impact of an AI tool (i.e., ChatGPT) on English language learners’ and
teachers’ motivation. The results demonstrated that the AI-assisted language learning tool had a great
contribution to the learners’ writing and reading skills, while it had neutral influences on their speaking
and listening skills.
Schmidt-Fajlik (2023) compared the differences between ChatGPT, Grammarly, and ProWritingAid tools
in checking, understanding, and developing EFL learners’ English grammar. The findings indicated that
ChatGPT was more effective than the other AI tools in detecting and improving the EFL learners’ English
grammar.

AI tools also promise to create the most suitable lesson plan by analyzing your level and speaking skills.
Therefore, every student adopts an individual study system this way. For example, Flalingo not only
creates lesson plans with AI but also chooses the most suitable expert teacher for you.

Another benefit of AI-powered platforms and applications is text-to-speech technology, which converts
written texts into audio files. This feature can be especially helpful for students who struggle with
reading, as they can listen to the audio and practice speaking along with it (Nuraini Herawati et al.,
2022)
Huang et al., (2023) claim that one of the most significant benefits of AI-powered platforms and
applications is their ability to automate grading and provide feedback on reading comprehension
exercises. Students can submit their responses to reading exercises, and the platforms and application
can automatically grade their work and provide feedback on areas for improvement. This feature can
be incredibly beneficial for students as it allows them to identify their strengths and weaknesses
in reading comprehension quickly (Huang et al., 2023)

AI can provide intelligent tutoring systems that offer personalized guidance and support to students.
These systems utilize natural language processing and machine learning algorithms to engage in real-
time conversations with students, answering their questions, providing explanations, and offering
targeted feedback.
AI algorithms can evaluate responses, identify areas of improvement, and offer tailored suggestions for
further learning. This timely feedback promotes a growth mindset, helps students track their progress,
and fosters continuous improvement.

“You have to stop thinking that you can teach exactly the way you used to teach when the basic medium
has changed,” he explains. If students can turn to ChatGPT or other AI language models for quick and
easy answers then there is a problem with the lesson, Harouni believes.
