STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

In 2017, a friend recommended a Japanese movie entitled A Silent Voice. The storyline was

intriguing. Since then, my interest in Japan has begun. I am always impressed by how well-

disciplined the Japanese are. My curiosity deepened as I discovered more fascinating aspects of

Japan beyond anime and manga. Once I became a university student, I heard about the Japan

Exchange and Teaching Programme from some of my professors and saw many Assistant

Language Teachers’ videos on different social media platforms, which rekindled my interest in

following their footsteps. As an educator, I see it as a great platform to broaden my horizons and

to better promote internationalization, since I come from a diverse cultural background.

Furthermore, it is a way to experience Japanese culture firsthand. In exchange, I can impart my

personal experiences and knowledge from my country, the Philippines.

During my university years, I was an active volunteer in our local community. The community

leaders organized a lot of activities almost every three months, in which I participated, especially

in their community clean-up drive and Education on Wheels Program. During the pandemic, I

provided tutoring services for almost a year and handled three learners from various levels.

Although it was a small and informal teaching experience, I was able to improve myself and,

most especially, impart my knowledge, which I found very fulfilling. I was able to maximize my

potential, flexibility, and time management skills.

As a Bachelor of Elementary Education graduate, creativity in making instructional materials,

realia, and visual arts has been a part of me. These play a huge role in creating an interactive

and engaging class. Along with this, I am open to learning new things, including the Japanese

language. These days, I find Haruki Murakami’s work captivating and have started reading one of

his books. It is a good start as I gain ideas and insights about Japanese culture and literature. I

will continue to do so and exert effort to eventually learn the language.

Furthermore, I have been living independently from my time as a university student until now.

There might be some challenges in participating in the program, but through these community

engagements and personal challenges I have overcome, I could easily relate to and utilize
activities and leadership that promote cultural exchange. I am used to dealing with foreign

students, especially Korean. I am currently working as an online English as a Second Language

teacher for various age ranges, including professionals. This helps me adapt to cultural

exchanges on a daily basis. I believe that I can use my talent and work experience in this field as

an asset in becoming an ALT teacher.

After the JET Program, one of my goals is to maintain a positive relationship and connection with

Japan. I will foster my community's ideas, knowledge, and acknowledgment of Japanese culture

and its language. Second, I will continue educating and nurturing children's full potential. If given

the chance to work in a field interconnected with Japan, either inside or outside the country, I

would love to, as the program is a great stepping stone in my career. Third, education has no

boundaries—it is limitless. So, I would like to pursue a master's and/or doctorate degree. As a

professional, it is essential to have continuous development, understanding, and knowledge of

my field. Most importantly, I aim to keep up with the things I have learned throughout my journey.
