SUBJECT: APPLIED MECHANICS (NEW SCHEME)

1 (a) Write down the S.I and C.G.S unit for the following quantities and also give the relation for their 5X2
conversion from S.I to C.G.S:
(i) Pressure (ii) Mass density (iii) Work (iv) Force (v) Viscosity
(b) Calculate the components of a force of 300 N which is directed down to the right at a slope of 2 to 3 05
in the second quadrant.
(c) What do you mean by rigid body? Differentiate Vector and Scalar quantities 05
2 (a) A telephone has 5 wires radiating from the top of the pole producing the following concurrent pulls. 15
Find the resultant pull and direction
(i) 2000 N due south. (ii) 1900 N due east (iii) 1850 N at 300 east of north.
(iv) 2100 N due north west. (v) 2050 N due north east
(b) Explain the principle of transmissibility of forces? 05
3 (a) Two forces having magnitudes 3P and 2P respectively acting on a particle has a resultant R. If the first 08
force is doubled, the magnitude of the resultant is doubled. Determine the angle between the forces.
(b) A horizontal beam 8 m long is supported at the ends & is subjected to a udl of 20 KN/m over whole 8,4
length. In addition to udl it carries a point load of 80 KN at a distance of 3 m from the left end.
Calculate the upward forces of supports and draw its free body diagram with a neat sketch.
4 (a) Find two unlike parallel forces acting at a distance of 180 mm apart which are equivalent to a force of 10
30 N, the greater of the two forces being at a distance of 80 mm from the given forces.
(b) What are laws of friction? Explain sliding & rolling friction with examples. Define angle of friction. 4,4,2
5 Determine the co-ordinates of center of gravity for the following. 10 X 2

6 (a) A body weighing 1000 N is lying on a rough horizontal plane for which μ = 0.75. Determine: 15
(i) Horizontal force required to move it. (ii)Normal reaction. (iii) Limiting force of friction
(iv) Resulting reaction. (v) Angle of friction
(b) What are the different supports used in beams? Differentiate between Hinged and Roller support. 05
7(a) Draw the neat sketch and write down the expression for velocity ratio and two field applications for 5X2
the following:
(i) Worm & worm wheel. (ii) Single Winch Crab.
(b) An isosceles triangle of side 6m is resting on the base of a rectangle 3 X 4 m. find the position of C.G 10
of the composite section.
8(a) Write down five live examples of a couple? 05
(b) Four forces of magnitudes 2P, 3P, 4P & 5P act respectively along the sides of a square taken in order. 15
Determine the magnitude, direction & position of resultant force. Take each side of square as 2m
long.
9(a) Differentiate between reversible machine and self-locking machine. 04
(b) What is the law of machine? Write down the equation for the same. 04
(c) In a machine the effort was found to move a distance of 20 m when load moved a distance of 0.5 m. 4X3
With this machine a load of 22400 N was raised by the application of an effort of 800 N. Determine:
(i) Velocity ratio. (ii) Mechanical advantage. (iii) Efficiency.
(iv) Portable effort had the machine been perfect.
10(a) Write down Co-ordinates of C.G for following: 5X2
(i) Solid circular cone. (ii) Hollow hemisphere. (iii) Cylinder. (iv) sphere (v) Semi Circular Lamina
(b) A body weighing 2000 N is lying on a rough horizontal plane. A pull acting at an angle of 30 0 with the 10
plane makes with the body just to move find the magnitude of the effort if coefficient of friction is
0.8.
