Assignment - 01 Total Marks: 40
Instructor: Dr. Nazish Kanwal
Submission Date: September 25, 2024
Question 1.[02 marks] Consider the matrices:
   
3 4 2 1 7 1
 2 -3 1  , and  0 17 1  .
5 7 1 0 7 1
Are these two matrices row equivalent to each other? Justify your answer.

Question 2.[03 marks] Solve the given system of equations by using Gauss Jordan method:
(a)

3x2 − 6x3 + 6x4 + 4x5 = −5

3x1 − 7x2 + 8x3 − 5x4 + 8x5 = 9
3x1 − 9x2 + 12x3 − 9x4 + 6x5 = 15

(b)

35x + 6y − 7z = 15
90x + 15y − 21z = 40
25x + 3y − 7z = 11

Question 3.[04 marks]

(a) Find an equation involving the g, h, & k that makes this augmented matrix corresponds to a
consistent system.
 
1 -4 7 g
 0 3 -5 h 
-2 5 -9 k

(b) Suppose that system below is consistent for all possible values of a and b. what can you say
about the coefficients c and d.

x1 + 3x2 = a
cx1 + dx2 = b.

Question 4.[05 marks]

(a) Consider the three planes in R3 whose equations are 3x + y = 6, 5x + y + z = 6, and 3x + z = 1.

Do they have a point in common? If so, find that point.
(b) Find all values of α and β such that the system

x + αy = 2
4x + 8y = β.

has: (i) No solution (ii) unique solution (iii) Infinitely many solution

1
(c) Find all values of the λ such that the given system does not have a solution.

λx1 − 2λx2 = 5
3x1 + 6λx2 = −7.

Question 5.[06 marks]

(a) Determine the values of a for which the system has
(i) no solution, (ii )exactly one solution, or (iii) infinitely many solutions.

x + 2y − 3z = 4
3x − y + 3z = 1
4x + y + (a2 − 2)z = a + 4

(b) Solve the matrix equation for X.

(c) Let A be a matrix of the form

α β
2α 2β

3
Explain why the system Ax = must be inconsistent. How can one choose a nonzero vector
1
b so that the system Ax = b will be consistent? Explain.
Question 6. [06 marks]

(a) Determine whether the given matrix is invertible or not? Justify your answer.
 
-1 -3 0 1
 3 5 8 -3 
 
 -2 -6 3 2 
0 -1 2 1

(b) Let

(c) Solve the system by inverting the coefficient matrix.

5x1 + 3x2 + 2x3 = 4

3x1 + 3x2 + 2x3 = 2
x2 + x3 = 5.

Question 7.[03 marks] Solve these three systems (AX = b1 , AX = b2 , AX = b3 ) at the same
time. whose coefficient matrix and matrices of constant terms are given below.
       
