Noise Barrier
• Noise barrier materials are used to block noise from transmitting from
one area to another. These acoustical materials are typically made of
flexible mass-loaded vinyl or other engineered materials. Performance
is measured by placement of these materials between source and
receiver and is measured by an STC rating. All Noise Barriers are rated
by an STC number or Sound Transmission Classification. The higher the
STC rating, the more efficient the product is at blocking noise path

• NOISE BARRIERS These materials range from dense materials to block

the transmission of airborne sound to devices and compounds used to
isolate structures from one another and reduce impact noise. •Sound
barrier materials are used to reduce the transmission of airborne sound.
The Block Aid series of products include the standard one pound per
square foot non reinforced barrier, transparent material when
observation or supervision is required, reinforced vinyl to create a
hanging barrier partition.
• COMPOSITES •Composite materials are manufactured from combinations of
various materials from open and closed celled foams to quilted fiberglass and
barrier. These products are used to block and absorb sound for machine
enclosures as well as blocking airborne sound and impact noise. Some of these
products include Composite Foams, StratiQuilt Blankets and Floor Underlayment.

• VIBRATION CONTROL •Vibration control products are used to absorb vibration

energy and prevent structural noise transmission. These include vibration
damping compounds and vibration pads, isolation hangers, and resilient clips.
They improve sound transmission loss.

Composite Material
Composite materials are products that combine
both Noise Barrier & Sound Absorber materials.
These products when engineered together
typically prove the greatest levels of noise
reduction. Acoustical composite materials have
both an NRC and STC rating. Again, the higher
the NRC and STC rating, the more efficient the ❑ Pros

Diffusers
 Diffusers are used to treat sound aberrations, such
as echoes, in rooms.
 They are an excellent alternative or complement
to sound absorption because they do not remove
sound energy, but can be used to effectively
reduce distinct echoes and reflections while still
leaving a live sounding space.
 Compared to a reflective surface, which will
cause most of the energy to be reflected off at an
angle equal to the angle of incidence, a diffusor
will cause the sound energy to be radiated in
many directions, hence leading to a more
diffusive acoustic space.
 It is also important that a diffusor spreads
reflections in time as well as spatially. Diffusors
can aid sound diffusion, but this is not why they
are used in many cases; they are more often used
to remove coloration and echoes.
Classification of Diffusers
1) Maximum length sequence diffusors :
• Maximum length sequence based diffusors are made of strips
of material with two different depths.
• The placement of these strips follows an MLS.
• The width of the strips is smaller than or equal to half the
wavelength of the frequency where the maximum scattering
effect is desired. Ideally, small vertical walls are placed
between lower strips, improving the scattering effect in the
case of tangential sound incidence.
• The bandwidth of these devices is rather limited; at one
octave above the design frequency, diffusor efficiency drops
to that of a flat surface.

2) Quadratic-residue diffusors

• A quadratic residue diffuser is a device designed to break up

directional sound waves and reduce powerful first order
reflections, standing waves and flutter echo.
• It is an excellent complement to sound adsorption because it
does not remove energy like acoustic panels.
Classification of Diffusers
3) Primitive-root diffusors :
• Primitive-root diffusors are based on a number theoretic
sequence based on primitive roots. In terms of performance,
they are very similar to Quadratic-Residue Diffusors.

4) Optimized diffusors :

• By using numerical optimization, it is possible to increase the

number of theoretical designs, especially for diffusors with a
small number of wells per period.
• But the big advantage of optimization is that arbitrary shapes
can be used which can blend better with architectural forms.
5) Two-dimensional ("hemispherical") diffusors :

• Designed, like most diffusors, to create "a big sound in a small

room," unlike other diffusors, two-dimensional diffusors
scatter sound in a hemispherical pattern.
• This is done by the creation of a grid, whose cavities have
wells of varying depth, according to the matrix addition of
two quadratic sequences equal or proportionate to those of a
regular diffusor.
