INTRODUCTION

Department of General Surgery at Government ,Medical College


Aurangabad is a postgraduate teaching department affiliated to
Maharashtra University of Health Sciences Nashik (MUHS).
It takes twenty post graduate residents for MS general surgery course
every year.
It caters largely to people from Marathwada andsurounding region . It is the
largest amongthe three public funded Government Medical College
hospitals in this region comprising seven districts .
The department caters to over 100,000 patients each year, approx
275/day. About 6000 major and 12000 minor surgical operations are
performed every year.
To produce best future surgeons we strive to foster a rich environment for
our patients, students and staff, provide quality education and research.
Located in the historic city of Aurangabad the capital city of Marathwadaour
department comprise of 20 full time faculties and 67 resident doctors.

MISSION:
The Department of Surgery's core mission is to provide health care through
scientific , evidence based clinical services and research ,
We are an established department since 1962 with roots in innovation and
quality. A variety of therapeutic ,interventional surgical, minimal access
,diagnostic and endoscopic procedures are performed. We have a
dedicated 12 bed trauma ICU for meticulous care of huge load of trauma
cases. The department has a very active teaching schedule for residents
enrolled for MS Surgery programme , MBBS undergraduates, BDS
undergraduates , and BPMT students .

VISION :
The department is striving to expand its services , we are focusing on
sophistication of services , increasing the department faculty strength ,
development of subspecialties like surgical gastroenterology , advance
minimal access surgery and coloproctology,
In future we have plan to make state of art facilities for advance minimal
access surgery, surgical gastroenterology ,coloproctology , paediatric
surgery and organ transplantation.

FUNCTIONS AND OBJECTIVES


We run teaching programme in General Surgery for the award of following
degrees
1. MBBS,
2. MS SURGERY,
3. BDS,
4. BPMT courses.
5. Department is actively involved in running faculty development
programme
6. Conduct MET (Medical Education Technology) workshop
affiliated to MCI.

We are committed for quality care of surgery patients in this area, with
available resources we are able to look after most of the surgical conditions
involving

2. Trauma and

3. Burns ,
4. GI surgery ,

5. Pediatric surgery,

6. Basic Neurosurgery,

7. Basic Urology,

8. Basic Plastic surgery.


9. Oncosurgery. and 10.Vascular Surgery .

The department provides training for the M.S GEN.SURGERY course


affiliated to Maharashtrauniversity of health sciences (MUHS).
Intake 20 candidates /year . The seats are recognized by MCI .
The residents are rotated in various units in the department every six
months. including
allied branches like Oncosurgery , CVTS, and Neurosurgery.
Accomodation for residents is provided by hospital within the campus.

Activities:

The Department manages the surgical admissions through OPD and


casualty department where all serious patients are first stabilized before
shifting to surgical wards.

The department runs General Surgery OPD every day.8.30 am to


12.30pm, this includes minor OT. The department has well equipped
operation theatres for routine and emergency work, apart from this there
is a minor surgery OT for septic cases in the main OT complex
and another two minor OTs next to casualty and in the OPD each.
