    Fire Prevention

    &
    Fire Watcher Training
    The Fire Watcher has a very important job. He
    is required to watch out for the tradesman
    carrying out HOT work to which he is assigned
    should there be any danger and warn him.
    He is to act as the eyes and ears of the
    tradesman to allow him to concentrate on the
    job he is doing without having to stop to look
    about for danger or hazards.
    THE FIRE WATCHER MAYNOT LEAVE THE AREA
    WITHOUT A RELIEF TO TAKE OVER

    Duties and Responsibilities:
    Before work starts:
     Check the area for flammable/combustible
    materials.
     Wet down the area below where hot work is to
    be carried out.
     Erect the necessary barriers below the work
    area.
     Check fire extinguisher is in working condition.
     Check the location of other fire extinguishers.
    Duties and Responsibilities:
     Make sure that FIRE BLANKETS are in position below
    where the HOT WORK is being carried out.
     Check the area to ensure all sparks and slag are
    contained.
     Ensure any cables are not exposed to sparks and slag.
     Ensure the welding machine or generator are not
    leakage and properly grounded.
     Ensure the drip pan are available under the engine
    part.
     Ensure the machine and tools are good condition.
    On completion of work and breaks :
     Check the whole area for smouldering
    debris or scaffolding. If necessary
    WET DOWN.
     Remain at the work site for 15 minutes
    after work stoppage for lunch break.
     Remain at the work site for 30 minutes
    after completion of work day.
    Place FIRE BLANKET and Extinguisher in a
    safe place.
    CLASSES OF FIRE
    Class A Fire
    Fire involving solid combustible materials
    except metals.
    Example: Wood, Paper, Coal etc…
    Class B Fire
    Fire involving flammable/combustible
    liquids/liquefiable substances
    Example: Petrol, Gasoline, Oil etc
    Class C Fire
    Fire involving Electrical Equipment
    Example: Electrical switch, Panel board

    Class D Fire
    Fire involving combustible metals
    ( Sodium, Magnesium & other flammable metals)

    • Fires involving combustible vegetable or


    animal non-saturated cooking fats in
    commercial cooking equipment.
    There are different types of Fire Extinguishers
    according to the Class of Fire:

    Duties and Responsibilities:
     No other duties will be
    assigned to them.

     Only tread man will do


    the work.
    Duties and Responsibilities:

     Fire watchers will wear red


    helmet for identification.

     Ensure that the fire extinguisher


    is on location and correct type.

     Adequate fire blankets to control


    welding sparks and slag.
     Fire watchers will not
    leave the assigned post
    unless replace by another
    certified fire watcher.
    Duties and Responsibilities:
    Actions of FIRE WATCHER in case of FIRE
     To stop the work

     Activate the alarm.

     Extinguish the fire if you capable to do so.

     Call to emergency number “911” for help / Inform to


    supervisor or safety personnel.
    Duties and Responsibilities:
    The fire watch shall
    remain at the work site
    for at least 30
    minutes after hot work
    activities.
    REMEMBER:

    SAFETY IS EVERY ONE’S RESPONSIBILITY
