Procedures

I. Introduction (10 mins )

Say: In our journey as teachers, it is very normal to encounter challenges in

teaching especially in employing varied and appropriate strategies. We have to
continuously improve ourselves to embody the skills and attitudes so we are
able to practice the needed pedagogical content knowledge to provide
experiential learning and to ensure the mastery of all learning competencies.

This session will help us to become more resourceful in teaching

vocabulary particularly in identifying meanings of content area words through
denotations. Likewise, it will guide us to have an effective and interactive
teaching - learning process.

Generally, our session aims to:

Page | 6

Deepen knowledge and understanding in applying various

strategies in teaching vocabulary particularly in identifying
meanings of content area words as reflected in the session
outcomes.

Specifically, our session aims to:

1. Enrich competencies in applying a range of teaching strategies

to develop critical and creative thinking, as well as other higher-
order thinking skills through simulation and sharing of insights.

2. Apply knowledge and understanding in applying various

strategies in teaching vocabulary through activity sheets crafting.

3. Reflect one's practice in planning for personal development.

Do: Priming Activity. The facilitator will show and tell the participants
(volunteers) to complete the following statements and be ready sharing
insights to the group.

I know various strategies in teaching vocabulary particularly in

identifying meanings of content area words

I do use the following strategies in teaching vocabulary

I feel I can enrich my competencies in teaching vocabulary by

applying a range of teaching strategies to develop critical and creative
thinking, as well as other higher-order thinking skills through
___________________________________ .

II. Activity (10 mins )

Do : The facilitator will narrate the situation of Teacher Daisy in her class.
Teachers will be grouped and will be asked to read and analyze the situation of
Teacher Daisy as stated in Leading Exercises.

Teacher Daisy is teaching English 3 with 40 learners.

One day, she taught identifying meanings of content
area words utilizing a word association circle strategy.
After giving the formative assessment, she found out that
only advanced learners have mastered the competency.

The following guide questions could be used in analyzing the situation:

Questions Responses

1. What could be the probable

causes why not all of her
learners met the expected level
of mastery?

2. How about her assessment

strategy?

3. What factors should Teacher

Daisy consider in designing her
lesson?

4. What could be the appropriate

strategies/ activities that
Teacher Daisy should utilize?

III. Analysis (10 mins )

Say: Now let us try to analyze the group’s responses. The Group may choose
the discussant.

Do: After the presentation of each group. Discuss the commonalities of

responses of the group.Give the significance of the responses of the teachers
and relate it to the topic to be discussed.

IV. Abstraction (70 mins.)

Do: Discuss the following details :

A. Background/ Definition

Our everyday teachings are filled with different forms of conversations

and a variety of readings which entails encountering difficult words. These
words may be embedded in texts of all kinds: from leveled readers to trade
books to informational articles. These words are unavoidable and confusing yet
it provides for richer instructional opportunities.

Literacy This refers to the capability one acquires in order to read,

understand, and construct textual material.

Vocabulary is at the heart of content learning. It is the peak of

students’ understanding of concepts. In other words, it is part of a learners’
web of knowledge that draws their understanding of the alphabetics, syntax,
and semantics of language. However, teaching vocabulary as an isolated skill
weakens the learners’ skill to use language as a tool for learning. Vocabulary
instruction must increase interactions between teacher, learner, and text in
which learners continually grow in their ability to describe, explain, and ask
critical questions.

Vocabulary development is the process of a person increasing the

number of words which he or she uses in everyday life. Generally, it really
refers to the process of widening a person’s vocabulary, but it can also mean
the literal development, or the initial forming of a vocabulary. As vocabulary
develops, teaching is most effective when all efforts focus on the words and
concepts that are most relevant to each learner’s particular life experiences
rather than words that may or may not have real- life meaning to the learners.

Denotation implies the true dictionary meaning of a word which is

the central meaning of the expression. It is the precise and straightforward
definition of that term with no emotions or feelings attached to it (Surbhi
2021).

Homonym - It is a word that sounds the same or is spelled the same

as another word but has a different meaning.

Synonym - It is a word or phrase that has the same or nearly the

same meaning as another word or phrase in the same language.

Antonym - This is a word that means the opposite of another word.

Teaching Strategies refers to techniques, practices, approaches,

and systems teachers employ in their classroom practice to advance student

learning.
Creative Thinking Skills are thinking skills that involve exploring
ideas, generating possibilities and looking for many right answers
rather than just one.
Critical Thinking Skills are high level thinking skills such as

analysis,
of evaluation, interpretation, or synthesis of information and application

creative thought to form an argument, solve a problem, or reach a conclusion.

Higher-Order Thinking Skills are complex thinking processes which

include analysis, evaluation, synthesis, reflection and creativity.

Say: Now, let us play Name a Learning Activity Game. I will present
illustrations and you will name them. Then we will elaborate all of them as
different teaching-learning activities and / or strategies that will help us in
teaching vocabulary development, particularly finding meaning of words
through denotations.

Do: Let the Name a Learning Activity Game starts

2. Using Word Parts/Matching Type Activity

2. Word Box

3. Vocabulary Notebook

4. Word Detective
Say: Next is an Illustration of Practice (20 mins.). Now that you are familiar
with different teaching strategies in teaching vocabulary development,
particularly finding meaning of words through denotations. I hope that we can
come up with activity sheets that we can use in our everyday teaching and in
the delivery of a Learning Action Cell (LAC) Session with fellows.

● The facilitator and participants may refer to the module for different
teaching and assessment strategies that can be employed in teaching
vocabulary development, particularly finding meaning of words through
denotations.

Do: Simulate a LAC Session with a template below

● After the simulation each group will tell the reasons why they choose
their strategy and will give its impact to the learners.

IV. Application (8 mins )

Say: After brainstorming and learning different strategies/ activities that

develop critical and creative thinking as well as higher order thinking skills in
teaching vocabulary particularly in identifying meanings of content area words,
it is time to create your own activity sheets.

Highly Proficient Teachers

Instructions: Collaborate with proficient teachers in developing activity sheets

in identifying meanings of content area words. Evaluate the developed
activity sheets to help them to refine these.
Closure (2 mins.)

“Vocabulary enables us to interpret and to express. If you have limited

vocabulary, you will also have a limited vision and a limited future.”
