CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

The construction industry is a significant contributor to environmental degradation,

accounting for approximately 40% of global energy consumption, 30% of greenhouse gas

emissions, and 50% of waste generation (United Nations Environment Program, 2016). In

Nigeria, the construction sector is experiencing rapid growth, driven by urbanization and

infrastructure development. However, this growth has led to increased environmental

concerns, including waste management and resource depletion (Afolayan, 2020). Recycled

construction materials (RCMs) have emerged as a viable solution to mitigate these

environmental impacts. RCMs are materials recovered from construction and demolition

waste, processed, and reused in new construction projects (Kofoworola & Gheewala, 2009).

The use of RCMs reduces the demand for virgin materials, conserves natural resources, and

decreases waste disposal costs (Wang, Li & Zhang, 2019). In Lagos State, Nigeria's largest

urban center, the construction industry generates significant amounts of waste, with an

estimated 2.5 million tons of construction waste generated annually (Lagos State Government,

2020). The state's growing population and infrastructure needs necessitate sustainable

construction practices.

Recent studies have highlighted the benefits of RCMs in sustainable construction. For

instance, a study by Olanipekun, Oladele, and Babalola. (2020) found that using recycled

aggregate in concrete reduced carbon emissions by 30%. Similarly, a study by Adeniyi,

Ogunkova, and Oyediran, (2019) demonstrated that recycled concrete aggregate reduced

1
construction costs by 20%. Despite these benefits, the adoption of RCMs in Nigerian

construction projects remains limited. Challenges include lack of standardization, regulatory

framework, and public awareness (Afolayan, 2020). This study aims to explore the use of

recycled construction materials in sustainable building projects in Lagos State, Nigeria,

addressing the knowledge gap on RCMs' adoption and the construction industry contributes

significantly to environmental degradation and waste generation.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the growing demand for sustainable construction practices in Nigeria, the

adoption of recycled construction materials (RCMs) in building projects remains limited. The

Nigerian construction industry generates approximately 2.5 million tons of waste annually,

with Lagos State accounting for a significant portion (Lagos State Government, 2020). The

lack of effective waste management and recycling infrastructure results in environmental

degradation, health hazards, and economic losses.

Specifically, the problems include:

Low awareness and understanding of RCMs' benefits among construction professionals and

clients (Afolayan, 2020).

Inadequate regulatory framework and standards for RCMs (Kofoworola & Gheewala, 2009).

Limited availability and accessibility of RCMs (Olanipekun et al., 2020).

High costs associated with RCMs' production and processing (Adeniyi et al., 2019).

Lack of incentives for contractors to use RCMs (Wang et al., 2019).

2
These challenges hinder the widespread adoption of RCMs, perpetuating environmental

degradation and resource depletion. This study aims to explore the use of recycled

construction materials in sustainable building projects in Lagos State, Nigeria, addressing the

knowledge gap on RCMs' adoption and challenges.

1.3 Aim and Objectives

The aim of the study is to investigate the use of recycled construction materials in

sustainable building projects in Nigeria.

CHAPTER TWO

LITERATURE REVIEW

2.1 Overview

The construction industry contributes significantly to environmental degradation,

accounting for 40% of global energy consumption, 30% of greenhouse gas emissions, and

50% of waste generation (United Nations Environment Program, 2016). Nigeria's rapid

urbanization exacerbates these issues. The Nigerian construction industry generates massive

waste, with Lagos State accounting for a substantial portion. The lack of effective waste

7
management and recycling infrastructure results in environmental degradation, health hazards,

and economic losses. With the research questions on the current level of awareness and

understanding of recycled construction materials among construction professionals in Lagos

State. The benefits and challenges associated with using recycled materials in building

projects. policies and incentives that can promote the adoption of recycled materials. And the

objectives of Investigating awareness and understanding of recycled materials among

construction professionals. Identifying benefits and challenges of using recycled materials.

Evaluating policies and incentives promoting recycled materials adoption. A mixed-methods

approach, combining surveys, interviews, and case studies. This study contributes to

sustainable construction practices, waste reduction, and environmental conservation in

Nigeria. With limitations of Time constraints, geographical limitation, and potential

respondent bias. This study investigates the use of recycled construction materials in

sustainable building projects in Nigeria, focusing on Lagos State

2.2 Conceptual Framework

The conceptual framework illustrates the relationships between awareness, benefits,

policies, and adoption of recycled construction materials (RCMs) in sustainable building

projects, consisting of the following Components:

Independent Variables:

Awareness of RCM, Benefits of RCMs (Economic, Environmental, Social), Policies and

Incentives (Government Support, Regulations, Tax Benefits)

8
Dependent Variable:

Adoption of Recycled Construction Materials in Sustainable Building Projects.

Awareness of RCMs → Benefits of RCMs → Policies and Incentives → Adoption of RCMs

→ Sustainable Building Projects.

2.3 Theoretical Framework

The study adopts three theoretical frameworks:

Sustainable Development Theory (SDT) This theory emphasizes meeting present needs

without compromising future generations' needs, (United Nations, 2020).

Circular Economy Concept (CEC) This concept promotes reducing waste, recycling, and

reusing materials. (Geissdoerfer et al., 2017).

Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) This model explains how users accept and adopt

new technologies.(Davis, 1989).

The integrated framework explains how awareness, benefits, policies, and attitudes influence

the adoption of recycled construction materials (RCMs) in sustainable building projects.

2.4 Empirical Review

The use of recycled construction materials (RCMs) in sustainable building projects has

gained significant attention globally. This review examines recent studies on RCMs in

Nigeria, particularly in Lagos State. Afolayan (2020) investigated sustainable construction

materials in Nigeria, highlighting the potential of RCMs in reducing waste and environmental

impact.

9
Adeniyi et al. (2019) conducted a cost-benefit analysis of using recycled concrete aggregate in

building construction, revealing significant economic benefits. Olanipekun et al. (2020)

explored carbon footprint reduction in concrete production using recycled aggregate,

demonstrating environmental benefits. Kofoworola and Gheewala (2009) examined factors

influencing RCMs adoption in Thailand, identifying awareness, benefits, and policies as key

drivers. Ogunkova et al. (2020) investigated RCMs adoption in Nigerian construction

industry, highlighting challenges and opportunities. United Nations Environment Programme

(2016) emphasized the importance of sustainable building practices in reducing

environmental impact.

Geissdoerfer et al. (2017) explored the circular economy concept in construction, highlighting

RCMs as a key strategy. Lagos State Government (2019) launched the Lagos State

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Action Plan, emphasizing sustainable construction

practices.

Oyediran et al. (2020) examined the feasibility of using recycled materials in Lagos State's

construction industry.

2.5 Summary of Literature Reviews

The use of recycled construction materials in sustainable building projects has gained

significant attention in recent years. This literature review aims to explore the current state of

knowledge on the use of recycled construction materials in sustainable building projects in

Nigeria, with a focus on Lagos State.

10
Connect of Sustainable construction which involves the use of environmentally friendly

materials and practices to minimize the environmental impact of building projects

(Kofoworola & Gheewala, 2009). Has gained widespread acceptance globally, with many

countries adopting policies and regulations to promote sustainable construction practices

(Afolayan, 2020).

Use Recycled construction materials are materials that are reclaimed from existing buildings

or construction sites and reused in new construction projects (Adeniyi et al., 2019). The use of

recycled construction materials has been identified as a key strategy for reducing waste and

promoting sustainable construction practices (Ogunkova et al., 2020).

Several studies have identified the benefits of using recycled construction materials, including

cost savings, environmental benefits, and reduced waste (Kofoworola & Gheewala, 2009;

Afolayan, 2020). Additionally, the use of recycled construction materials can also help to

reduce the demand for virgin materials, thereby conserving natural resources (Adeniyi et al.,

2019).

Despite the benefits of using recycled construction materials, several challenges have been

identified, including lack of awareness, high cost, and limited availability (Ogunkova et al.,

2020). Additionally, the use of recycled construction materials may also require specialized

skills and equipment, which can be a challenge for some construction companies (Afolayan,

2020).

In Nigeria, the use of recycled construction materials is still in its infancy, with many

construction companies preferring to use virgin materials (Adeniyi et al., 2019). However,

11
with the increasing awareness of the need for sustainable construction practices, there is a

growing interest in the use of recycled construction materials (Ogunkova et al., 2020).

Lagos State is one of the most populous states in Nigeria, with a high demand for housing and

infrastructure (Afolayan, 2020). The state government has implemented several policies and

regulations to promote sustainable construction practices, including the use of recycled

construction materials (Ogunkova et al., 2020).

The literature review examines the use of recycled construction materials (RCMs) in

sustainable building projects in Nigeria, with a focus on Lagos State. Recent studies highlight

the potential of RCMs in reducing waste, environmental impact, and costs. It emphasizes that

RCMs can reduce waste and environmental impact (Afolayan, 2020; Olanipekun et al., 2020).

Economic benefits of RCMs include cost savings and job creation (Adeniyi et al., 2019).

Awareness, benefits, and policies influence RCMs adoption (Kofoworola & Gheewala, 2009).

Lagos State's construction industry faces challenges in RCMs adoption (Ogunkova et al.,

2020). Circular economy concepts and sustainable development goals support RCMs use

(Geissdoerfer et al., 2017; United Nations, 2020).

Gaps in Literature:

Limited studies on RCMs adoption in Lagos State.

Lack of empirical data on RCMs benefits and challenges.

Insufficient exploration of policies and incentives influencing RCMs adoption.

Methodological Considerations:

12
Survey and interview methods can provide insights into RCMs adoption.

Case studies can examine successful RCMs implementation.

Regression analysis can investigate relationships between variables.

The literature review highlights the potential of RCMs in sustainable building projects in

Nigeria, particularly in Lagos State. However, gaps in literature and methodological

considerations underscore the need for further research. The literature review examines the

use of recycled construction materials (RCMs) in sustainable building projects in Nigeria,

with a focus on Lagos State. Recent studies highlight the potential of RCMs in reducing

waste, environmental impact, and costs.
