SECTION 10: NURSE CALL

1. GENERAL
1.1. Description
The nurse call scope of works covers a patient activated call system intended to provide an
efficient communication between patient and nurse within the ward. The system shall be
specifically designed to suit hospitals.

1.2. Current Standards


IEC 601.1

Deutsches Institute fur Normung ( DIN 41050 part 1 & 2 );
ANSI/UL; or Australian Standard (AS)

1.3. Design
1.3.1. Technology
The system design shall be microprocessor based.
The system shall be able to provide routine and emergency signalling. The system should
be capable of being upgraded to high fidelity voice communication and data transmission
between the various locations within the ward.
The system shall also have the provision for future expansion such as coupling to a
computer network.

1.3.2. Patient Room System Configuration


Each bed shall be equipped with a patient call module, Code Blue module and a Pendant
push button.
Each patient room shall be equipped with the following devices:
- Cancel/Nurse Presence Unit,
- Over door light
Each Toilet / Bathroom room shall be equipped with the following devices :
- Nurse Call unit;
- Cancel unit;
The nurse station counter shall be equipped with a master station & other accessories.
All support equipment for the nurse call system shall be included and located near the
nurse station.

1.3.3. ICU/Recovery System Configuration


Each bed shall be equipped with a Code Blue module and a cancel.
The nurse station counter shall be equipped with a master station & other accessories.

All support equipment for the nurse call system shall be included and located
near the nurse station.

1.3.4. Electric supply


The system shall be equipped with power supply units, directly operable from the hospital
standard electrical supply (220 V ± 10 %, 50 Hz ± 2 %, single phase A.C).
The system shall be equipped with an uninterrupted power supply capable of
supplying operation for at least 10 minutes in case of power failure.
The system shall be equipped with at least 24-hours storage of call facilities in
event of a power failure.

1.3.5. Electric operation


The system operating voltage shall be 24 V D.C ± 10%. Power supply units shall be fully
regulated with watch-dog circuitry and equipped with no-load, overload and short-circuit
protection devices to prevent damages to wire and any system components.

1.3.6. Electrical Protection


All room distribution units shall be equipped with the electrical protection to protect the
room distribution unit and patient room modules.
The system shall be protected from all electrical interference. The system shall conform
to appropriate EC directives for electrical safety and EMC requirements.
All associated components shall carry CE marking on them.

1.3.7. Electrical Installation


All signal wiring shall be hardwired. The tenderer shall highlight the type of cable used
for the installation. Any special system cable must be clearly indicated with its technical
specification in the submission.

1.3.8. Fault Monitoring


The system shall be self-monitoring recognise any faults in the system with alarms at the
nurse consol station.
The system shall be designed with an auto switch-over to an Emergency mode in event of
main controller or bus connection failure.
The system shall display any malfunction as a collective message at the nurse control
console.

1.3.9. Programming
The system shall be easily programmed on site, by means of a hand-held programming
device. The system shall also have to cater for alternative programming (manual
programming) of system configuration in the event of the failure of the programming
device.

All call varieties and lighting intervals shall be configurable and all displayed text shall
be able to be altered via this programming device. The adjustment of the buzzer tone
shall be done via the configuration device.
The sound levels of the buzzer of all types of the call shall be distinguishable from those
of other types.
The programmable device shall preferably equipped with the capability of being used as
a service tool. All system parameters shall be configured outside the patient room so as to
have minimum interruption to the patient.

2. QUALITY
2.1. Samples
Submit samples of all equipment & components.

2.2. Shop Drawings


Submit a full set of proposed site plans, technical specifications, installation guidelines,
catalogues, block and/or wiring diagrams of the proposed system.

2.3. Product Data


Submit product data for all equipment & components.
Template for cutting out holes in bedhead trunking.

3. MATERIALS AND COMPONENTS


3.1. Nurse Call Station
A nurse call station is required for each level. A typical nurse call controller should allow
up to 30 rooms or 40 beds.
The unit shall be a mobile, centralised, desktop model, capable of being connected directly
to and operate on the common busline or star configuration without additional devices. It is
used as a display and query unit for calls and presence.
The unit shall have the call and status identification functions for the following
indications: room, bed, Normal call, Code Blue call, Assist call, Toilet /Bathroom call,
Nurse Presence, Malfunction.
It shall be able to display up to four messages of the nurse call system at the same Time
and further calls can be scrolled.
The unit shall be equipped with call priority capability. Calls shall be displayed in
Accordance with its prioritised levels. It shall also be able to change the priority of a
programmed patient room or a selected bed with sensitive patients.
A combination of both visual text indication and audio tone at the master station shall occur
on the raising of any call.
The system shall have a reminder or mute function that will mute the audible alarm for a
short duration of time and upgrade the call to a reminder status.

3.2. Nurse Call System Logging


A central nurse call logger shall log and print all nurse call system activity, including; date,
ward, room, bed, call type, time initiated, and time cancelled, as well as mute operation
and reminders.
The nurse call logger may be at one central location or at each nurse call station as
required.

3.3. Call Point Controller


A call point controller shall marshall the signals from a particular room and drive the over
door lights.
Each call point controller should be suitable for 1 to 5 bed operation.

3.4. Over Door Lights


The unit shall be designed for easier viewing from any angle when illuminated. The unit
shall be installed outside and over the door of the patient room.
The unit shall be capable of being wallmounted.
The unit shall have at least two sections, one section for call, one section for Toilet /
Bathroom and one section for code blue (emergency).
In order to distinguish the different types of calls, the system shall be able to light or flash
the respective indication lamp to differentiate the type of calls.

3.5. Patient Call Points


3.5.1. Normal Patient Call
Initiated by activating a call push button or pendant push button, and causes illumination
of the LED reassurance indication of the call button. It shall be possible to indicate the
removal of a pendant, combined with the ability to deactivate this feature (software of
mechanical switch).
The unit shall comprise of the following:-
- Coloured Call push button with LED reassurance indication and inscription 'call' or call
symbol;
- Socket for pear push button.
- The unit shall be designed such that no dummy plug is needed for a vacant socket.
- The pear push button shall be equipped with LED reassurance indication and nursing
staff symbol engraved on it. It shall also have a 2m long flexible cord with variable
looping drop wire and equipped with strain relief feature.

3.5.2. Toilet
Initiated by activating a toilet call button, and causes illumination of the LED reassurance
indication of the call button.
Cancellation of this call shall be only from the originating site.

3.6. Emergency/ Code Blue


Activated by the Code Blue push button causes illumination of the LED reassurance
indication of the Code Blue push button and the over door light will flash the lamp
indication in an alternate manner( i.e. white, red).
The unit shall comprise of the following:
- Cancellation of this call shall be only from the originating site.
- Code Blue push button with LED reassurance indication and inscription of a special call
symbol, and;
- The push button shall be coloured and be clearly and easily differentiated from the other
push buttons.

4. EXECUTION
4.1. Manufacturer’s recommendations
The installation shall comply with the manufacturer’s recommendations. The manufacturer
shall provide a representative to supervise the installation and commissioning.

4.2. Bedhead Trunking


Where part of the nurse call system is supplied and installed as part of the bedhead
trunking, the systems shall comply with all the relevant requirements for the bedhead
trunking.
The nurse call buttons are to be capable of being installed in the bed head trunking, as a
complete faceplate unit.

5. COMPLETION
5.1. Training
Two sessions of on-site service training shall be provided for the front line personnel such
as the hospital maintenance team prior to handling over of the system.
Three sessions of application training shall be provided for nurses.
Subsequent application training shall be provided on a request basis and such training shall
be co-ordinated with the training department.

5.2. Spares
Submit a list of items comprises of spare part, test kit and special tools, recommended for
maintenance use.

5.3. Completion Tests


Test and commission the system in accordance with the manufacturer requirements and
submit Project director for approval.
