Logarithmic Function
Definition
Let a, b, and c be positive real numbers such that b ≠ 1. The logarithm of a with
base b is denoted by 𝑙𝑜𝑔𝑏a, and is defined as

A logarithmic equation can be solved for all x values that satisfy the equation. A
logarithmic function expresses a relationship between two variables (such as x and
y), and can be represented by a table of values or a graph.
If b > 1, then the logarithmic function y = log𝑏 𝑥 is increasing for all x. If 0 < b <1,
then the logarithmic function y = log𝑏 𝑥 is decreasing for all x. This means that log𝑏
𝑢 = log𝑏 𝑣 if and only if u = v.

For any real number x and constant b > 0, b ≠ 1, we can see the following
characteristics in the graph f(x)=logbx: one-to-one function; vertical asymptote x = 0;
domain: (0, ∞) and range: (-∞, ∞); x-intercept: (1,0) and key point (b, 1), y-intercept:
none; increasing if b > 1 and decreasing if 0 < b < 1.
Solution:
Step 1: Construct a table of values of ordered pairs for the given function by assigning
3
values for y. Then solve for x. A table of values for y=log2x is as follows:
1 1 1 1
x 1 2 4 8
16 8 4 2
y -4 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3
Now, let us solve x given y = log2 x where y=-4 from the table.

Step 2. Plot the points found in the table and connect them using a smooth
curve.

Example 3. Sketch the graph of 𝑦 = 𝑙𝑜𝑔4𝑥 .
Solution:
Step 1: Construct a table of values of ordered pairs for the given function by assigning
values for y. Then solve for x. A table of values for y=log 4x is as follows:
1 1
x 1 4 16
16 4
y -2 -1 0 1 2
Now, let us solve for x given y = log4 x where y=-2 from the table.
Step 2. Plot the points found in the table and connect them using a smooth
curve.
Solution:

y -2 -1 0 1 2

In addition to the graphs of the logarithmic function, let us also take a look
at how the graph of the parent function y=logbx transform either by shifting to the left
or right, shifting up or down, stretches, and compresses.
