SWI018 Load Securing and Restraining - Trailers V0.1 (1)
Scope
The purpose of these safe work instructions is to provide appropriate guidance to AMHEC employees and
subcontractors to load securing and restraining.
Prior to Use
Adequate and sufficient lashing gear for tie downs should be made available.
Adequate and sufficient dunnage should be made available.
Weather conditions shall be considered for load stability.
Inspect all anchor points around the trailer bed.
Inspect all lashing gear including chains and belts.
Securement/Lashing gear to be in a good working condition with no defects.
Ensure the tower light jack stand is securely positioned and properly locked during transportation.
Process
Evaluate the type, weight, dimensions, and characteristics of the load before determining the
appropriate securing methods.
Select the right tie-downs, straps, chains, or other securing devices based on the load's specifications
and weight.
Determine the number and placement of tie-downs based on the load weight and dimensions.
Dunnage shall be used when applicable.
Ensure to use latching eyes/anchor points to secure the load as they are designed to provide secure
attachment points for securing the load.
Distribute the load evenly across multiple latching eyes within the trailer to maintain stability and
prevent shifting during transit.
Use blocking and bracing techniques to prevent movement within the trailer, especially for irregularly
shaped or loose cargo.
Ensure to maintain a lower center of gravity and reduce the risk of a top-heavy load.
Implement cross strapping methods for certain loads to prevent lateral movement. Create an "X"
pattern with the tie-downs.
Use edge protectors to prevent tie-downs from damaging the cargo or the trailer's edges/chain.
Periodically inspect the load during transit to ensure tie-downs remain tight and secure and address
any issues promptly.
Ensure all loose parts of the load, such as tarpaulins or items within the cargo, are properly secured.
