The grid accompanying these activities is a useful visual resource which supports some of the activties in Volume 2 of Developing the IB Learner Prole. Activity 1 The Prole in Action Start by taking some current newspaper clippings or related news articles from the internet- remember, these dont have to relate directly to the unit of inquiry, they could explore another part of the programme such as someone who you feel embodies the IB mission statement; The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect. Discuss the story and identify the main theme and the major personality(ies) involved. Use a combination of images from the story, quotes from the story or details from the text and place them into the appropriate attribute which the students feel is being displayed. Encourage discussion about the placement of the text/ pictures, and promote students into justifying their choices and opinions. Example; In 2010, a group of Chilean miners were trapped underground after a collapse. During this time, the miners and their rescuers displayed the full array of attributes in order to save the men. Inquirers- Several potential rescue plans were explored, and the possible advantages and disadvantages of each had to be investigated before a nal plan was decided upon. Balanced- The miners recognised that they needed to maintain a routine in order to increase their survival chances. They devised an exercise and work cycle in order to preserve a normal schedule in order to preserve physical and mental tness. Principled- All miners maintained an ordered atmosphere during times of high duress. They refused to fall into panic or disorder, recognising their best chances of survival lay in discipline and team-work.

Activity 2 Attributes with Attitudes A good activity to help students see the connection and integration between the LP attributes and attributes. This could either be played as a game or as a straightforward discussion activity. Students use the 10 space attribute grid and take turns to place one of the LP attitudes in a blank space. Their partner/opponent can challenge their choice at any point if they have a persuasive argument about a better location for the placing. The activity could be more of a game by copying 2 versions of the attitudes and blindly selecting one from a random pile before placing it into a blank space of the attributes grid. This would make the discussion more challenging and encourage the students to recognise that the attitudes are not exclusive to one attribute. The game ends when the grid is complete. IB Learner Prole Attitudes

Appreciation Commitment Confidence Cooperation Creativity Curiosity Empathy Enthusiasm Independence Integrity Respect Tolerance

Activity 3 I Want To Be Like... This activity would make a good weekend/ homework activity, particularly in the early part of the year. It would also make a good ongoing wall display... Each week the students take a LP attribute and nd someone who they feel illustrates the behaviours and attitudes required for this attribute. They present their research and learning about the person in a form of your/ their choice. You could frame their presentation about some questions; -What attribute does your person possess? What evidence can you give to support your choice? -What attitudes does the person show in action that helped you select them? -What do you admire in this person, and how could you be more like them? (Focus your thoughts around the attributes and attitudes of the LP) -How would this person enhance our class essential agreement? The activity could be done as a whole class, with an attribute taking the focus each week OR you could select a class nominee each week who is excused normal homework to take their turn at I Want To Be Like... homework. Each week, a new person could be added to the class wall.

Activity 4 Bad Hair Day An artistic activity which could be linked to further exploration of How We Express Ourselves. Students can explore the attributes which they feel they display the most effectively and build these into a self portrait through one of the methods displayed below. They could also take only one of the attributes and explore the Looks like, feels like, sounds like activity from Volume 1. The main attribute could form the main body of the hair, and the other actions, attitudes and behaviours could be woven into the rest of the hair style.

Activity 5 Prole Graph The example below is a radial prole graph for 12 different attributes. Each line on the radial prole graph represents the extent to which the students feel that they demonstrate the attribute of the LP. To complete this accurately and honestly, the students will need to explore what different levels look, sound, feel like for each attribute e.g. What does a perfect communicator look, sound, feel like? What would someone be doing to be half way up the inquirer axis? This would raise valuable discussion. Each rating is then joined up to give a pictoral impression of how each student has strengths and areas of weakness in the prole attributes.

Complete the graph at different points during the year in order to measure progress. This would also be a good idea around conference time in order to share the attributes with parents and community. This activity would be equally as benecial with the attitudes, and would promote exploration, discussion and reection.
