In Class Assignment 2025

The document discusses various aspects of truss type steel bridges, including identification of the truss type, expected forces, advantages and disadvantages, and the importance of triangulation and pin connections in design. It also addresses issues related to corrosion at bolted connections, compares trapezoidal box girder sections with multiple I girder sections, and highlights the benefits of larger sections at bridge ends. Additionally, it emphasizes the efficiency of steel box girder bridges while noting vulnerabilities that can lead to failures due to design, detailing, and construction tolerances.

(1) (a) Figure Q.1a shows a view of a truss type steel bridge in Sri Lanka.

Figure Q.1a : View of a truss type steel bridge in Sri Lanka

(i) Identify the steel truss type shown in Figure Q.1a, the expected forces in the truss members
under gravity loads and list the advantages and disadvantages of the truss type. [20 marks]
(ii) During the design of truss type steel bridges, the general practice is to ensure that the
elements of the truss are triangulated and assume the connections between the steel members
in the truss are pin connections. Discuss the benefits of triangulation and assuming pin
connections. [10 marks]
(iii) Comparatively in truss type steel bridges, the rate of corrosion is high at the bolted
connections. List the possible reasons, which may contribute for early corrosion in the bolted
connections. [10 marks]
(iv) Compare the pros and cons of using trapezoidal box girder section against using multiple
I girder sections in highway bridge superstructure construction. [10 marks]
(v) List the pros and cons of providing cross laterals between the trusses. [10 marks]
(vi) Discuss the advantages of having larger sections at the ends of the bridge. [10 marks]
(b) The steel box girder is generally acknowledged as an efficient and economical form for bridge
deck. “A series of steel box girder bridge failures exposed the vulnerability of box girder bridges
to defects in design, detailing and constructional tolerances”. Clearly explain the above statement
on box girder bridge failure by providing at least one example for each aspect mentioned in the
statement. [30 marks]
