Innovation is in our DNA. We HUMANS thrive on progress and pushing boundaries. IN order for
us to survive and for the bettermenr of the whole
Today we will dig in four amazing concepts and definition of some famous scientific heritage.p
Thank you to my wonderful group mates for their insights and lessons. To sum up:
- GR talked about the Scientific Revolution in Africa. He highlighted that the history of the
sciences in Africa is rich and diverse, spanning agronomy, metallurgy, engineering,
textile production, and medicine.
- Bles discussed the impact of the Inf9rmation revolution, stating that it has dramatically
changed the way people live.
- And danica she specifically mentioned Johann Gutenberg, world famous printing press
- Of course, Jecel mentioned the important people who made these advancements
possible.

Now Chapter 3
Well for my topic i will be discussing1 Science, Technology and Nation Building, presenting how
the policies of the government regarding science and technology, how it is being implemented
through its various departments and agencies, and its role in nation building.
The root cause of what we have today lies in the thoughts and efforts of those who conceived
and worked on it.
● NEXT SLIDE
Scientists and technologists are the backbone of an industrialized nation. They are key players
in research, innovation, industry, and manufacturing. Thus, they are essential for nation-building.

--- The Role of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST)
The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) is pivotal in advancing the technological
and scientific capabilities of the Philippines. Here's an in-depth look at its responsibilities and
functions:
2. Conducts Scientific Research and Promotes Public Awareness of Science and Technology:
To address pressing national issues and foster a culture of scientific literacy, DOST conducts
extensive scientific research across multiple fields such as agriculture, industry, energy, health,
and environment. Additionally, the department promotes public awareness and understanding of
science and technology through educational programs, outreach initiatives, and public events,
making science more accessible and engaging to the Filipino people.

--- Seven Strategic Outcomes
1. Innovation and Stimulus:
The DOST aims to foster a culture of innovation by stimulating research and development
activities. This involves providing support for new ideas, encouraging creativity, and facilitating
the development of groundbreaking technologies and solutions that can drive economic growth
and address societal challenges.
Example: The establishment of the Advanced Device and Materials Testing Laboratory
(ADMATEL) by DOST provides local companies with advanced testing services for
semiconductor devices and materials, boosting innovation in the electronics industry.
Example: The introduction of the Solar-Powered Water Purification System in remote areas of
the Philippines has promoted the adoption of renewable energy technologies and improved
access to clean drinking water for communities

Heres an Aerial view of solar water purification system
Despite being surrounded by vast expanses of water, 80.14% of households in Dumaran have
no access to clean water for drinking and sanitation, posing a serious health risk to residents
and a threat to the development of the remote island
As it is not connected to any water line, families have long struggled to have accessible quality
and safe water. For years, most of them fetch water from deep wells, which they then purify
using a makeshift filter made from containers, funnel, sand, and charcoal.
Those who can afford to travel to the mainland to buy purified water from refilling stations spend
around P75.00 for a 5-gallon container plus the transportation cost. Some enterprising traders
travel for about two hours across the sea to source out potable water from Roxas Water District
and sell them inside the island for P40.00 to P45.00 per gallon.
The DOST’s MIMAROPA office led the setting up of water source and filter system which is
connected to an existing water source in the area. The system employs two technologies — the
solar-powered water pump and the water treatment machine
- The residents now enjoy accessible purified water which was offered for free several
months after the installation
3. Critical Mass of Globally Competitive STI Human Resources Developed:
Building a strong pool of Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) professionals is crucial for
sustained progress. The DOST focuses on developing a critical mass of highly skilled and
globally competitive STI human resources through education, training, and capacity-building
programs. This ensures that the Philippines has the talent necessary to drive innovation and
remain competitive on the global stage.
SLIDE : Example: The DOST-SEI (Science Education Institute) scholarships have supported
thousands of students in pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, and
mathematics (STEM), developing a pool of skilled professionals who contribute to the country's
innovation landscape.
ask - who tried to get a scholarship sa DOST back when we were in grade 11 or 12?
4. Productivity and Efficiency of Communities and the Production Sector, Particularly MSMEs,
Improved:
The DOST aims to enhance the productivity and efficiency of communities and the production
sector, with a special focus on Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). By providing
access to new technologies, resources, and training, the DOST helps these enterprises improve
their operations, increase their output, and contribute to economic growth.
SLIDE Example: The Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) by DOST
assists MSMEs in adopting technological innovations to improve their products, services, and
operations, leading to increased productivity and competitiveness.
SLIDE Example: the Nationwide Operational Assessment of Hazards (NOAH) project uses
advanced technology to provide accurate and timely information on natural hazards, helping
communities prepare for and respond to disasters more effectively.
--- AGENDA 11
example
SETUP helps micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) improve their productivity and
competitiveness through technology adoption and innovation.
Description: An annual event where researchers, policymakers, and industry leaders gather to
discuss the latest advancements in science and technology, and align R&D efforts with national
priorities.
-Outcome: Strengthened collaboration among stakeholders and alignment of research
initiatives with national goals.
These are just a few examples of how Agenda 11 is being implemented in the Philippines to
enhance STI governance and contribute to national development.
"We have the potential to overcome every crisis if we unite and support one another, step by
step, in our journey toward success. By striving for equity and casting aside greed, we can build
a world where everyone thrives.
