Cloud robotics allows robots to rely on networked cloud computing resources to handle data processing and storage needs. This overcomes limitations of onboard resources and allows robots to perform computationally intensive tasks like machine vision. A timeline of cloud robotics shows early concepts in the 1990s, with Ken Goldberg presenting a remotely controlled robot in 1994. Research expanded into user interfaces and networked robotics. Google's driverless car is an example that uses onboard sensors but relies on cloud maps generated from satellite data and crowdsourcing.

Introduction
Robotics and Automation - one of the most prominent research
areas of 21st century
Enormous Demand of Service Robots in Industry and Homes
has led to an increased interest in the field.
Cloud Extensive Resources which are accessible over the
Intertnet (Network) can provide significant benefits to Robots and Automation.
Traditional Approach Traditional
Robotics and Automation System operate
independently using onboard computation , memory and programming.
Limitation of Resources Devices constrained by the resource
available at hand.
Robots have to perform Data or Computationally Intensive
Tasks e.g., Machine Vision/Perception , Sensor Data Gathering.
What if these systems are not constrained by the limitation of
Onboard resource?
Cloud Robotics floats into the views.

Cloud Robotics
Idea is simple - What if a Robot can rely on Network to handle
its Data and Computational Needs ?
Cloud Robot perform their operations with either Data or Code
from a network.
Spread of sensing, computation, and memory of the single
system onto the network.
Network Latency and Access issues necessitates that some
capacity for computation is to be maintained onboard.
Google Driverless Car
A good representative example of Cloud Robotics/Automation Application.
Localizing the location of car for better driving avoid collisions
and reach destination in a suitable time.
Onboard Resources LiDAR System maps the local
environment.
Cloud Resources - Local images combined with Satellite Maps,
Google StreetView and other CrowdSource resources Produce models that allow the car to drive itself.
Timeline of Cloud Robotics
Concept of Networked Robotics has been around . Proprietary protocols were put forward by a number of vendors. One of the famous General Motors Manufacturing Automation Protocol (MAP).
The advent of World Wide Web, HTTP, and IP saw a shift
towards a common standard.
Timeline of Cloud Robotics
1994 - Ken Goldberg presented the first remotely connected Robot. A simple industrial robot was controlled remotely via Broswer based GUI.
Mid and Late 1990s Research into User Interfaces and
Robustness led to the field of Networked Robotics.
1997 M. Inaba Remote Brained Robots Explored the
advanteages Remote Control of Robots.
