An Improved SoftSwitching Buck

Converter With
Coupled Inductor

Lei Jiang, Chunting

Chengliang Yin, and
Jinchuan Li

This letter presents a novel topology for a buck dc dc converter with soft-switching capability,
which operates under a zero-current-switching condition at turn on and a zero-voltage switching
condition at turn off. In order to realize soft switching, based on a basic buck converter, the
proposed converter added a small inductor, a diode, and an inductor coupled with the main
inductor. Because of soft switching, the proposed converter can obtain a high efficiency under
heavy load conditions. Moreover, a high efficiency is also achieved under light load conditions,
which is significantly different from other soft-switching buck converters. The detailed theoretical
analyses of steady-state operation modes are presented, and the detailed design methods and
some simulation results are also given. Finally, a 600 W prototype is built to validate the
theoretical principles. The switching waveforms and the efficiencies are also measured to validate
the proposed topology.

Space Vector Pulse

Width Amplitude
Modulation for a
BuckBoost
Voltage/Current
Source Inverter

Qin Lei, and Fang

Zheng Peng

This paper proposes a space vector pulse width amplitude modulation (SVPWAM) method for a
buckboost voltage/ current source inverter. For a voltage source inverter, the switching loss is
reduced by 87%, compared to a conventional
sinusoidal pulse width modulation (SPWM) method. For a current source inverter, the switching
loss is reduced by 60%. In both cases, the power density is increased by a factor of 2 to 3. In
addition, it is also verified that the output harmonic distortions of SVPWAM is lower than SPWM, by
only using one-third switching frequency of the latter one. A 1-kW boost-converter-inverter
prototype has been built and tested using this modulation method. The maximum overall system
efficiency of 96.7% has been attained at full power rating. The whole system power density
reaches 2.3 kW/L and 0.5 kW/lb.

This paper proposes a multivariable digital controller to suppress the cross regulation of a singleinductor dual-output (SIDO) buck converter in continuous conduction mode (CCM) operation. The
controller design methodology originates from the open-loop shaping of the multi-input multi-output
(MIMO) systems. The control design procedure includes: 1) determination of a family of
nonparametric models of the SIDO converter at operating points of interest, 2) determination of
the class of the controller, and 3) system open-loop shaping by the convex minimization of the
summation of the square second norm of the errors between the system open-loop transfer
function matrices and a desired open-loop transfer function matrix. The proposed controller
minimizes the coupling between the outputs of the SIDO converter and provides satisfactory
dynamic performance in CCM operation. This paper describes the theoretical aspects involved in
the design procedure of the controller and evaluates the performance of the controller based on
simulation studies and experiments.

In this article, the new ZVTZCT Quasi-Resonant DC Link, which ensures zero crossings at any
time required for soft switching (SS) and provides zero voltage transition (ZVT) turn-on and zero
current transition (ZCT) turn-off together for the main switch of active snubber cell in pulse width
modulated or space vector modulated operation of inverter is presented. The new circuit combines
the most desirable features of the circuits presented previously and overcomes most drawbacks of
these circuits by using only one auxiliary switch with fewer other components. Consequently, new
ZVTZCT Quasi-Resonant DC Link, which is verified by a prototype of a 1.2 kW and 50 kHz
circuit, is analyzed in detail. All semiconductor devices operate under SS, the main switch is
subjected to no additional voltage and current stresses, and the stress on the auxiliary switch is
very low in the proposed new inverter.
