AIM

To enhance the power quality using Unified

Power Quality Conditioner

Abstract
A Unified Power Quality Conditioner is an controller which
provides fast reactive power compensation on high-voltage power
system.
It consists of pair of three-phase controllable bridges to produce
current that is injected into a transmission line using a series
transformer.
The controller can control active and reactive power flows in a
transmission line.
The UPQC is a combination of a shunt compensator and a series
compensator coupled via a common DC voltage link.

Objective
To minimize the line losses by using Unified Power Quality
Conditioner.
To design a control system with PLL and synchronous
reference frame.
To design a UPQC using series and shunt active filter to
compensate the voltage and current respectively
Voltage is taken as the reference for Series AF and current for
Shunt AF so the better compensation is achieved.
This UPQC controller compensates the line losses and thus
increases the efficiency.

1)The 3P4W UPQC use active compensation for the reduction of source current along with the power
quality problems, while the use of passive elements for the reduction of source current are advantageous
over the active compensation due to ruggedness and less complexity of control.

OVERVIEW VINOD KHADKIKAR ,MEMBER IEEE MAY 2012
1)Many industrial plants often consist of combined loads, such as variety of single phase loads and three
phase loads by a 3P4W source . The presence of fourth wire ,the neutral conductor, causes an excessive
neutral current flow and thus demands additional compensation requirements to reduces the neutral
current in 3P4W system by various shunt inverter configuration

LIMITATION IN THE EXISTING

SYSTEM
It can act either series or shunt
compensator
Voltage stability is affected.
Low power factor

Disadvantages of existing system

Either series or shunt compensation only can possible
The existing system consists of poor regulation
Line losses of existing system is high
Efficiency is low
As demand power increases, the power quality of the
power system decreases , leads to the losses in power
system
Voltage stability margin is low

ADVANTAGES OF PROPOSED
SYSTEM
Good response against different types of fault
This method will not be affected by the initial
gain settings, changes of system conditions, and
the limits of human experience and judgment.
Self tuning process.
Better response for dynamic system.
Voltage Regulation, power factor correction is
achieved.

Advantages of proposed system

compensator hence it has advantages of

both compensations.
Power System Stability is increased
System Reliability is increased
System regulation is increased
voltage stability margin of upqc is higher
than the compensator in existing system
Less production of reactive power during
voltage sag
