The MXC connector is a new design specifically created for next-generation

optics in the data center. Designed with advanced composite, precision-molded
plastics instead of metal and ceramics, the materials and manufacturing techniques
enable lower-cost manufacturing.
This new connector can support up to 64 fibers.
At a speed of 25GHz it can carry 1.6 Tbps of data.

HISTORY

In September of 2013 Intel and Corning announced a new Optical Connector

technology called MXC.
Corning and Intel have worked together to develop MXC*, the connector for the
21st century data center.

INTRODUCTION TO OPTICAL FIBER

COMMUNICATION
Fiber-optic communication is a method of transmitting
information from one place to 1another by sending pulses of
light through an optical fiber. The light forms an
electromagnetic carrier wave that is modulated to carry
information.
First developed in the 1970s, fiber-optics have revolutionized
the telecommunications industry and have played a major
role in the advent of the Information Age. Because of its
advantages over electrical transmission, optical fibers have
largely replaced copper wire communications in core
networks in the developed world.
Optical fiber is used by many telecommunications companies
to transmit telephone signals, Internet communication, and
cable television signals. Researchers at Bell Labs have
reached internet speeds of over 100 petabit kilometer per

1. Transmits 1310 nm with low optical loss to enable distances of up to 300

meters at 25 Gbps, three times longer than current technologies.
2. 1310 nm is the wavelength (color) of light that is optimized to support
Intel Silicon Photonics Technologies.
3. The fiber also will be available for sale to other cabling manufacturers.
4. As a bend-insensitive fiber, ClearCurve LX fiber has almost 1/10 the bend
radius of traditional fibers.

The Connector

CONTINUE

1. The MXC connector will support up to 64 fibers, each operating at 25 Gbps.

2. The total aggregate bandwidth of the 64-fiber version is 1.6 terabits of data per
second.
3. The MXC connector uses a lensed ferrule to carry light from one connector to
the other, rather than physical fiber contact of the end faces as with traditional
connector technology.
4. The fiber lenses have a beam expander that increases the diameter of the light
beam by four times.
5. The MXC connector has fewer parts and the connectors assembly requires
fewer processing steps, all of which reduces the connectors total
manufacturing cost.

Compared to existing optical connector
solutions, the unique plug and receptacle
design provides increased density with
fewer components, making it cost
effective and ideal for new equipment
card edge requirements driven by
implementation of embedded, midboard optics modules. PCB space
consumption on the inside of the
equipment is minimized by combining
the traditional adapter and on-card plug
into one simple, condensed, single piece
housing.

SUMMARY

Intel and Corning are bringing a new fiber

and connector system to market designed
specifically for the next-generation data
center.
The MXC connector and ClearCurve LX
fiber will be available for sale from
Corning in the near future. The intention is
for the MXC Connector to be made
commercially available to other
manufacturers.
