WRITING TASK 2

format: essay
style: formal, academic
min. 250 words
extend your ideas – justify your opinion, give specific examples
Things to consider:
 You need to spend more time on Writing Task 2 (40 mins
vs. 20 mins)
 This is because Task 2 is worth 2/3 of your total score
 This means that your score for Task 2 will be the main
determining factor in your overall score
 If you get a higher score for Task 1and lower score for Task 2,
you will get an overall lower score
 The reverse is true for a higher score in Task 2
 So you need to do many practice essays
More things to consider:
 Many candidates find Task 2 more difficult than Task 1
 This is because you must quickly come up a set of coherent
ideas about any topic that is on the test
 Many candidates say: “I didn’t know what to write because I had never
thought about that issue/topic before” OR “I don’t know anything about
global warming because I didn’t study science at university”
 Firstly, as an informed global citizen you need to keep up to date
with issues both national and internationally (ie, read
newspapers and topical magazines)
 Secondly, all the topics on the IELTS test are specifically chosen to
be relevant to candidates around the world and do not require
specialist knowledge
 Thirdly, try to read model essays and get a sense of the kinds of
topics that come up regularly
