TUTORIAL

UCAS…the beginning….
HE PREPARATION
• UCAS – www.ucas.com

• Registration with UCAS

• University open days (See induction book and University websites)

• HE talks (Jack Ward – check emails – for updates on guest speakers to

the college)

• Preparation of personal statement

• Individual tutorials (for references)

• Interview preparation
Agenda….
• Using the Prospectus & University online sites, determine what you are

going to apply for


• Present me with a record (print out) of the entry requirement of the course

you are applying for – applicable to Access – email individual universities


for confirmation of Final Access entry grate, if you cannot find these details
– especially Universities outside NI)
• UCAS registration (must be done through college – this is very

important!!!! – you need to attach to your tutor on the system – so you


need to follow the steps we provide you with)
• Certificates check!!

• HPAT Aptitude
HPAT
• HPAT is an assessment tool used by University of Ulster for all Allied

Health degrees – Dietetics, OT, Speech & Language, Physiotherapy,


Podiatry, Radiotherapy – note many have moved to Magee Campus
• Registrations open 2nd Oct 2017 & closes 5 th Jan 2018 at 5.00pm

• Apply early – late applications may have further to travel to sit test!!!!

• Test Date 27th Jan 2018

• Results issued - Late March 2018

• Registration & Sample Booklets available at http://hpat-ulster.acer.edu.au/

• Cost £111  (payable via credit card) £35 late fee on top!!!!
UCAS (www.ucas.com)
• UCAS opens now & closes Jan 2018 (see ucas site for specific dates)

• You will need details of:

• Qualifications to date - year, exam board, result (including Access & Employability cert.)

• Employment History to date

• UCAS offer up to 5 options on UCAS

• Approx. £13 for one course

• Approx. £24 for more than one – up to 5 courses

• Personal Statements – should be no more that 600 words approx. (4000 characters)

• Statements should sell you!

• Relate previous work experience to your acquired skills

• Use key words and terms – to be discussed next week


Research before you apply
• Ensure you are eligible to apply for the course you want – if in doubt, contact

admissions at the university

• Ensure you tutor is aware of what grade is required – they must predict this

grade when writing your reference

• Statement - It is a good idea to search for ‘the qualities of a…..’ and relate these

key qualities and key words into your statement

• UCAS application must be fully completed by Friday 6th October 2017

• Statements need to be sent to tutors and verified by Friday 20th October 2017

• All ucas must be paid and sent to tutors by Friday 1st December 2017
Registration process

• You need to register before you can start your application

with UCAS

• We will take you through this – you need a password

(buzzword) which we will give you

• It will ask you to select your tutor name from the list

THESE ARE VERY IMPORTANT STEPS


Application form
• Once registered you can get started on filling out your

application form!!
• There are 6 sections you need to complete

• Personal details

• Additional details

• Education

• Choices

• Employment

• Personal statement
Application Form
• Each section must be completed. There is a small tick box

at the end of each section: ‘section complete’ which you

must tick when you are happy the section is completed.


• Section complete
What happens next..
• Once you have completed your form you can pay and send

• DO NOT DO THIS UNTIL WE HAVE CHECKED YOUR

FORM TOGETHER!!!
• Payment is by credit/debit card

• Once you have paid and sent – the form will go to your tutor

(me!)
• I will check your form again before I approve it and also

attach a reference.
Track your progress
• Your application form has now been submitted to your

universities.

• You can now TRACK your progress and wait to see what

their responses are.

• At this point, there is nothing more the tutor can do…apart

from support and advise!!!


Track your progress
Offers you may see when logging into track are:

• Conditional

• Unconditional

• Invitation for interview

• Withdrawn

• Unsuccessful
Replying to your offers

• You will be notified of a date to reply by (usually May –

extended if nursing haven’t made offers at that point)


• Options are:

• Firm acceptance

• Insurance acceptance

• Decline
UCAS EXTRA

To use Extra you need to have:

• already made five choices

• received decisions from all these choices, and

• either had no offers or declined all the offers you have

received.
Clearing
• If you do not get an offer for university or you have

declined all your offers you can go through clearing.

• Many of our students gain a university place through

clearing…so don’t be disheartened!!!!


Careers/UCAS websites
• The Careers website will give up to date information on talks

within the college from the universities – watch your emails and
the notice boards for info.
• The website also has useful tools to help you determine what

you would be ideally suited to in a profession if you are unsure

Now what? Today……
• You should have already…..

• Decided what you are going to apply for & printed a copy for your

tutor
• Keep options open and DO NOT apply to just one course – always have a

back up option or two


• Use your time to source course requirements and ensure you are eligible to

apply

• Over the next weeks…..

• Development of personal statement for drafting

• 1:1 meeting in class to assist with writing you personal reference & help with

statement writing
Today…..
• Register with UCAS (record all ID no.’s etc)

• Complete the first section of the application (Personal Details)

• The remaining sections can be completed in tutorial over the

next two weeks and in your own time at home.


• Start writing your personal statement….

• It is a good idea to search for ‘the qualities of a…..’ and relate these key

qualities and key words into your statement
