MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY LABORATORY

• Medical Laboratory Technology (TLM) or Health Analyst is a profession that

works on health facilities that carry out the services of inspection,
measurement, determination and testing of materials derived from humans or
non-human materials for the determination of types of diseases, causes of
diseases, health conditions or factors that can affect the health of individuals
and society.
• These health facilities are in the form of Health Laboratories such as Clinical
Pathology Laboratories which examine samples in the form of human body
fluids such as blood, sputum, faeces, urine, liquor cerebro spinalis (brain
fluids), etc. to obtain data or results as a diagnosis of a disease. Its coverage is
also broad including microbiological (bacterial) examinations, parasitology
(fungi, protozoa, worms), hematology (blood cells and plasma), immunology
(antigens, antibodies), clinical chemistry (hormones, enzymes, glucose, lipids,
proteins, electrolytes , etc).
In Indonesia, it is more commonly known as the
Health Analyst, while the international world
uses the term Health Laboratory Technology
Expert.
What is Health Laboratory Technology?

• Health Laboratory Technology (international: Medical Laboratory Science /

Technology) is a health science discipline that pays attention to all laboratory
and analytical aspects of human body fluids and tissues and environmental
health sciences.

MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY
LABORATORY OF FUNCTIONAL
• 1. Develop procedures for retrieving and processing specimens
• Carry out analytic tests on reagents and specimens
• 2. Operate and maintain laboratory equipment / instruments
• 3 Evaluating laboratory data
• Evaluate new laboratory techniques, instruments and procedures effectively and efficiently
• 4 Plan, organize, implement and evaluate laboratory activities
• 5 Guiding and fostering other health workers in the field of laboratory engineering
• 6 Design and carry out research in the field of health laboratories
Role of medical laboratory technology

• 1 Technical implementation in health laboratory services

• 2 The supervisor of the technical operation of the health laboratory
• 3 Researchers in the field of health laboratories
• 4 Extension in the field of health laboratories (Promotion Health Laboratory)

Obligations of medical laboratory technology

• 1 Develop procedures for retrieving and processing specimens.

• 2 Carry out analytical tests on reagents and specimens, which range from
simple to complex.
• 3 Operate and maintain laboratory equipment from simple to sophisticated.
Abilities that must be owned by TLM

• 1 Science related to its function in a health laboratory.

• 2 Skills and knowledge in specimen collection, including preparation of
patients (if needed), labeling, handling, preservation, or fixation, processing,
storing and shipping specimens.
• 3 Skills in carrying out laboratory procedures.
• 4 Skills in carrying out testing methods and tool usage correctly.

Professional Organization

• The organization that houses alumni of Health Analysts or Health Laboratory

Technology Experts is PATELKI (Indonesian Health Laboratory Technology
Expert Association. Whereas the organization that serves as a forum and
bridges the thoughts of Health Analyst students is IMATELKI (Indonesian
Health Laboratory Technology Student Association).

TLM Job Prospects

• Many agencies and companies that require the competency of a Health Analyst,
such as Private Clinical Laboratories, Government or private hospitals, Regional
Health Laboratories, Food and Drug Supervision Centers (BPOM), Police Forensic
Labs, SAINS research institutes (LIPI, Biofarma), lecturers. There is a Health Analyst
who works in the Anatomy Pathology Laboratory who examines samples in the
form of tissue surgery (histopathology). In addition, many also work in the food
and beverage industry, medicine and cosmetics because in the teaching curriculum
there are courses in Analytical Chemistry, Food and Beverage Chemistry, and
Toxicology
