Unit Built Machine Tools

Unit-built machine tools are custom-built using modular components that can be assembled in different configurations. The modular components include spindle heads, feed units, slide ways, and tool turrets. These modular machines can have multiple spindle heads, milling heads, and tool turrets performing machining simultaneously on complex parts like automobile axles and chassis. Unit-built machine tools offer flexibility to machine complex parts on simple machines and save setup time compared to custom-built machines.

CUSTOM BUILT MACHINE TOOLS

These are special purpose machine tools tailor-made for

each product. Modern custom built machine tools
perform different operations like turning, milling, drilling,
boring etc simultaneously on complex parts.

Each machine is designed separately for a specific purpose.

UNIT BUILT MACHINE TOOLS
Unit built machine tools are custom built with modular type
construction. Different functional parts of the machine like
spindle head, feed units, slide ways, facing units, tool turrets
etc are available as standard parts and these modules are
assembled to obtain the required configuration.

These machines may have multiple drilling heads, milling

heads, tool turrets etc, performing machining simultaneously
on complex parts like automobile rear axle, chassis etc.

ADVANTAGES OF UNIT BUILT MACHINE TOOLS

1. Very high flexibility in machining

2. Complex parts can be machined on simple
machines of modular construction
3. Setup time saved because re-clamping
is not required
4. Batch size can be small or medium
5. Drilling and milling machines etc can be
designed according to individual requirements
6. Simple to highly complex machining tasks can be done
with multiple multi-axis units and NC rotary axes
7. Spindle units can be situated freely in the space
8. Simultaneous multi-sided machining on one work piece
9. Tool turrets or NC-controlled facing drives can be used
10. Spindle and facing units can have automatic tool changing
11. A wide range of machining processes can be
integrated chaining into entire production lines.
Design guidelines for modules (units)
1. Each unit must have a meaningful functionality
eg. spindle head, slide unit, feed unit etc.
2. Modules must be interchangeable without use
of measuring equipment
3. Each module must be self-contained with its own
power drive, feed-back and lubrication.
4. Each unit should have its own servo pack and
electronic interface.
5. Modules must be usable in any orientation.
6. Modules must be interchangeable in a short
time (half an hour)
