1 Introduction To Computer Networking

If everything is correct then click 'Cancel' to close the window and then exit
the Control Panel.
Changing the Workgroup Name
On the 'Computer Name' tab described above there is a 'Change' button to allow you to
alter the name or workgroup of your computer.
Clicking this opens the 'Computer Name Changes' window.
Edit the computer name if required. Each computer on the network must have a
unique name.
Edit the Workgroup name to be identical to that of the other computers on the
network. The workgroup name is displayed in upper case regardless of how it was
entered.
Click 'OK'. You will receive a "Welcome to the 'xyz' workgroup" message.
Click 'OK', you will receive a "You must restart this computer for the changes to
take effect." message.
Click 'OK' to return to the 'System Properties' window. There will now be a warning
message at the bottom looking like this:
In the General tab, highlight the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) item, and clickProperties.
Then:
•Click OK to close each window.
•Restart your computer.
•Then, check your IP address again, to make sure that the changes were applied.
Other way in Creating IP Address
To set an IP Address in XP right-click on My
Network Places and select Properties.
Right-click on the adapter you want to set the IP for and select
Properties.
Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and click the
Properties button.
Now change the IP, Subnet mask, Default Gateway, and
DNS Server Addresses. When you’re finished click OK.
You will need to close out of the Network Connection Properties screen
before the changes go into effect.
Then you must click close to take
effect.
