INTRODUCTION :
ENERGY CONVERSION IN A T.P.S.
Thermal Power Station works on ‘Rankine Cycle’
Components of TPS:
1. Boiler 2. Steam Turbine
3. Condenser 4. Pump.
& the Generator
BOILING PROCESS:
Nucleate Boiling :As the saturation temperature is reached, Bubbles of Vapors are
formed, they rise up and condense. As the temperature of the heating surface is
increased the bubbles formed finally reach the surface & escape and surrounding
water particles come down to take up the space of the bubbles. This is nucleate
boiling.
FILM BOILING:
As the heat transfer through the heating surface is increased we can reach to a
point where individual bubbles are no longer formed and instead the entire heat
transfer surface gets a layer of steam formed as the bubbles coalesce .
The water particles are no longer coming down to wet the heating surface
Due to this the heating surface can get over heated this is undesirable.
210 MW BOILER TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS :
Function of the boiler is to generate
steam at specified pressure &
temperature.

The superheated steam system has mainly
three sections. The low temperature
superheater section(arranged in the second
pass of the, unit), the radiant platen
superheater (arranged at the outlet section of
the furnace) and the final superheater
(arranged after the reheater). Two number
superheater desuperheaters have been
provided in between the LTSH and the platen
superheater for controlling the superheated
steam temperature. The complete second
pass of the boiler(upto the economiser) has
been covered with the steam cooled
superheater wall sections.
