Minerals and Rocks

Earth, Life and science

the three main categories of rocks

 The three main types, or classes, of rock are

sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous and the
differences among them have to do with how they are
formed. Sedimentary rocks are formed from particles of
sand, shells, pebbles, and other fragments of material.
Together, all these particles are called sediment.
On what basis are rocks classified into three
categories?

 Geologists classify the rocks of earth's crust in one of three categories —

igneous, metamorphic, or sedimentary — based on how the rock was created.
Each type ofrock has its own unique characteristics: Igneous:
Igneous rocks form from the cooling of melted rock (either lava or
magma) into solid form.
Sedimentary

 rocks are formed by the accumulation ofsediments. There are three basic
types of sedimentaryrocks. Clastic sedimentary rocks such as breccia,
conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone, and shale are formed from mechanical
weathering debris.
Metamorphic

 rocks arise from the transformation of existing rock types,

in a process called metamorphism, which means "change
in form". The original rock is subjected to heat and
pressure, causing profound physical or chemical change
Igneous

 rock, or magmatic rock, is one of the three main rock

types, the others being sedimentary and metamorphic.
Igneous rock is formed through the cooling and
solidification of magma or lava. The magma can be
derived from partial melts of existing rocks in either a
planet's mantle or crust.
the origin of rocks.

 THREE ENVIRONMENTS OF ROCK ORIGIN -

INTRODUCTION. Geologists have defined three
environments in which rocks form: IGNEOUS:
Igneous rocks form as molten rock cools and
solidifies. ... underground - in which case the
melt is called 'magma' and the rock that results
from its solidification is described as 'intrusive'.
What are the 4 major processes by which
minerals form?

 There are four major processes by which minerals

form: crystallization from magma,precipitation, changes
in pressure and temperature, and formation from
hydrothermal solutions.
How are rocks and minerals formed?

 Minerals can be formed from the intense heat and

pressure found far beneath the Earth's crust in the
mantle, where molten rock flows as liquid magma.
Silicates in the magma can form minerals such as
hornblende and other igneous rocks as the magma cools.
This process can take millions of year
