Evaporation

A type of vaporization that

occurs on the surface of a
liquid as it changes into the gas
phase.
But Practically
The removal of solvent from
the solution by boiling the
liquor in a suitable vessel and
withdrawing the vapor, leaving
a concentrated liquid in the
vessel.

EVAPORATORS Made with by

Equipment used for the evaporation is known as Evaporators.

It can be used for separating liquid chemicals as well as to salvage
solvents.
It is used the manufacture of biological products, bulk drugs,
preservation of long-term activity or stabilization of enzymes etc.
Food and beverage industries also require these to produce products.

HORIZONTAL TUBE
EVAPORATOR

Principle

In horizontal tube evaporator, steam is passed through the horizontal

tubes, which are immersed in a pool of liquid to be evaporated. Heat
transfer takes place through the tubes and the liquid outside the tubes
gets heated. The solvent evaporates and escapes from the top of the
evaporator. The concentrated liquid is collected from the bottom.

8
Construction

It consists of
• A large cylindrical body with conical
shaped top and bottom. Made up of
cast iron/plate steel. Body ranges from
1.8-2.4 m.
• A steam compartment at lower part
with an inlet at one end a vent for non-
condensed gases on the other end.

9
Construction

• In the steam compartment 6-8 stainless

steel horizontal tubes are placed. Width
of it is usually half the diameter of the
body.
• An inlet for feed.
• One outlet for vapor at the top of the
dome.
• An outlet for thick liquid at the centre of
the conical bottom of the body.

Working mechanism

Feed introduction
• Until the steam compartment is immersed

Steam introduction

Conduction of heat to liquid through tubes.

• Occurs due to temperature gradient

Heat absorption by feed and solvent evaporation

Removal of evaporated vapor through outlet at the

top and collection of thick liquid from the bottom

Uses

It is best suited for non viscous solution that do not deposit scales or
crystals on evaporation. E.g. Cascara extract.
It is used in the preparation of distilled water for boiler feed.
Also used in pulp and paper industry.
Evaporation of sugar, syrups, beef extract, phosphoric acid, zinc
chloride etc.

13
Disadvantages

It’s not suitable for viscous liquids of poor circulation.

Due to its small size its capacity is also less than others.

It can’t be easily cleaned by mechanical means.

It can’t be used in case of scaling or salting liquids.
