• How do we find the sum of two integers with
like signs? And with unlike signs?
• To find the sum of two integers with like signs,
just add their positive values and affix their
common signs to the result. And to find the
sum of two integers with unlike signs, get the
difference between their positive values and
affix the sign of the number with the greater
value to the result.
• How do we find the difference of two
integers?
• To find the difference between two integers,
just add the additive inverse of the
subtrahend to the minuend.
• How do we find the product/quotient of two
integers with like signs? And with unlike signs?
• The result in the product/quotient of two
integers is positive if they have like signs and
negative if they have unlike signs.

• B. Plug me in!
• Each group will be given six algebraic expressions
numbered 1 to 6. The teacher will post a value on
the screen. Each group will then plug in that
given value on the first expression and perform
the indicated operation to obtain the first value.
The first value will be used to solve the second
expression. Then the second value obtained will
be used to find the third value in the third
expression. Then repeat the steps until you will
arrive at the final value obtained from the last
expression.

functions.
C. Evaluating Functions
To evaluate function is to replace its variable
with a given number or expression.
Think of the domain as the
set of the function’s input
values and the range as the
set of the function’s output
values as shown in the figure
below. The input is
represented by x and the
output by f(x).
Example 1
If f(x) = 2(x + 8), evaluate each.
a. f(4)
b. f(–2)
c. f(–x)
d. f(x + 3)
e. f(3x – 4)
Solution to Example 1
f(x) = 2(x + 8)
a. f(4) = 2(4 + 8) = 2(12) = 24
b. f(–2) = 2(–2 + 8) = 2(6) = 12
c. f(–x) = 2(–x + 8) = -2x + 16
d. f(x + 3) = 2(x + 3 + 8) = 2(x + 11) = 2x + 22
e. f(3x – 4) = 2(3x – 4 + 8) = 2(3x +4) = 6x + 8
Example 2
The price function p(x) = 640 – 0.2(x)
-represents the price for which you can sell x
printed T-shirts.
What must be the price of the shirt for each
entry in the table?

 p(500) = 640 − 0.2(500) = 640 − 100 = 540
 p(900) = 640 – 0.2(900) = 640 – 180 = 460
 p(1 300) = 640 − 0.2(1 300) = 640 − 260 = 380
• How do we evaluate functions?
• To evaluate functions, replace the
variable in the function by a
number or expression, that is,
setting an input value to get an
output value.

Solve the following problems involving
evaluating functions:
1. The area of a rectangular garden is 96 square
meters. What must be its width so that the length
is x meters? 24 meters? 16 meters? 12 meters?
Given the function: W(x) = A/x

2. Mr. Masinop deposited in the bank PHP 5,000.00


at 6% annually. What will be his balance in x
years? 3 years? 5 years? 10 years? Given the
function: F(x) = P(1+rx)

• f(x) = 96/x
• f(24) = 96/24 = 4
• f(16) = 96/16 = 6
• f(12) = 96/12 = 8
• Solution to problem no. 2
• f(x) = 5,000 (1 + 0.06x)
• f(3) = 5,000 [1 + 0.06(3)] = 5,900
• f(5) = 5,000 [1 + 0.06(5)] = 6,500
• F(10) = 5,000 [ 1 + 0.06(10)] = 8,000
Evaluate!
Evaluate each function at the indicated values of
the independent variable and simplify the result.

1.) f(x) = 9 – 6x ; f(–1)  15

The function C described by C(F) = 5/9(F − 32)
gives the Celsius temperature corresponding to
the Fahrenheit temperature F.
1. Find the Celsius temperature equivalent to
14°F.
2. Find the Celsius temperature equivalent to
68°F.
