Understanding OFDM
and Why OFDMA matters

Understanding an OFDM and OFDMA
Both divide into sub-channels (carriers) but OFDMA has more and the concept of Resource Units.
OFDM OFDMA

Analyzer

• “OFDM” is divided into Larger subcarriers. But only 1 user can ride the frame at a time over the air.
• “OFDMA” = Can assign individual users to each Resource Unit (RU) = multiple users per frame in the air.

Multi-User MIMO (MU-MIMO) introduced
11ac wave-2
How does it work? Why is it an advantage?
Some folks like to use the analogy of “Hub” and “Switch” SU ver. MU (not exactly accurate) but in MU-MIMO Clients are able to benefit
in the downstream link for higher aggregate throughput by essentially “tuning out” (nulling) portions of the RF to better decode their
traffic reducing interference.

2.4 and 5G high density issues given – limited
channels
2.4 GHz only has 3 non-overlapping channels 5 GHz has more channels - but even 5 GHz channels are reduced
when channel bonding is used but benefit is more capacity.

IoT benefits using Wi-Fi 6
More IoT devices coming on line everyday – Strong need for 2.4 GHz
• Superior battery life for IoT and mobile devices – Using target wake time
• Parallel processing for spectrum efficiency MU-MIMO (Uplink and Downlink)
• Small packet aggregation (using OFDMA) for reduced latency
• Longer guard interval for greater range outdoor links
• BSS Coloring helps increase channel reuse
• Better spectrum coexistence with other technologies e.g. Bluetooth, Zigbee
