AIM

• To Suitably resolve the errors & issues associated with manual

blood group identification.

• To overcome the Environmental problems & issues associated with

bio-medical waste.
INTRODUCTION

• Blood Grouping is a process to reveal the

specific blood group of an individual.

• Obligatory to know their blood group.

• Extremely useful in blood transfusions,

donation, accidents and other emergencies.

Disadvantages of Manual Blood Grouping

- Clerical error can result in "the wrong blood" being transfused into a patient,
an error which can result in the death of the patient.

- And the errors occur primarily due to mistakes in manual procedures — a blood
product is mislabeled or a technician in a hurry accidentally grabs the wrong
blood unit or one that has expired.
- Technical and clerical errors in the processing and testing of blood.

a) Error occurs depending on the density of the blood.

b) Confusion occurs while doing multiple slide testing.

- The result of the blood testing becomes false incase if the blood slide is
reversed in position. eg Correct Position Reversed Position

B +ve AB -ve
- Lab technicians get effected while handling HIV infected blood

products, serum.

- Lab technicians are exposed to infectious blood borne pathogens

during blood testing procedures.

- Lab technicians are injured while handling the blood slides with
broken edges.

Intervention of Image Processing in
Blood Grouping
This research relates a device to achieve a semi-automated system for
classification of blood group by microscope color images and safe
sterilizing of the blood grouping slides. This paper concerns with the ABO
and Rh blood typing systems. The classification of blood types in
microscopy images allows identifying the blood groups and Rh factor
accurately. The proposed system first performs image pre-processing by
color correction and then a color space conversion from RGB to HSI is
done. Then it extracts the color and texture features of the images using
statistical methods and Haralick method respectively. Finally it classifies
the blood type by support vector machine (SVM).
Survey Report
• Several Blood Banks and Labs were surveyed and various pictures and
sample blood was collected for the experimental purpose.

• Few photos of the technicians doing blood group identification are

Case Study - Incorrect Blood Typing

A person with B positive was incorrectly blood typed as O positive.
