Thai music features nasal vocals, duple rhythms with syncopation, and a pentatonic scale in a heterophonic texture. Some traditional Thai musical ensembles include the Piphat, an outdoor or indoor woodwind and percussion ensemble, the Khruang Sai which combines Piphat instruments with a string section for indoor performances, and the Mahori which blends Piphat and Khruang-Sai styles and is played by women in courts.

    PIPHAT
    • Ensemble in Thailand consisting of woodwind

    KHRUANG SAI
    • An orchestra that combines some of the percussion
    and percussion and wind instruments of the Piphat
    with a stretched string section.
    • Used for instrumental indoor performances
    MAHORI
    • Combination of Piphat and Khruang-Sai
    • It is played by women in courts
