Introduction

"Organic Architecture" was invented by Frank Lloyd

Wright in 1908
 Promotes harmony between man-made structure
and the nature
 Every structure is unique & unrepeatable.
• Organic architecture not only addresses
environmental concerns but also expresses
individuality
CHARACTERISTIC FEATURES
Main Features

1. Nature
2. Geometry
3. Environment
4. local materials
5. No harm to the nature
Inspired From Inspired From
Nature Geometry
 Inspired By Environment
 Organic architecture is the
blending of structure with
environment.
 Environment includes
land, water, wind, light,
material etc.
Frank Lloyd Wright
• He was an American
architect, interior designer,
writer and educator,
• who designed more than
1,000 structures and
completed 500 works.

• Wright promoted organic

architecture (exemplified
by Fallingwater).
Basic Principles of Wright Designs
 Organic Colors
 Simple Geometric
Shapes
 Integration of
Building with
Natural
Surroundings
 Strong Horizontal
Lines

 “one that is integral to site; integral to

environment; integral to the life of the
inhabitants.
 A house integral with the nature of
materials --- wherein glass is used as glass,
stone as stone, wood as wood --- and all the
elements of environment go into and
throughout the house.
 Into this new integrity, once there,
those who live in it will take root and grow.
 And most of all belonging to the
nature of its being.” Frank Lloyd Wright

 Integral to Materials - details of the building
were the materials themselves

Falling water

Falling water is also knows as

Kaufmann Residence
Is a house designed by architect Frank
Lloyd Wright in 1935 Pennsylvania
 This residence was built partly over a
waterfall
Earlier , It was used as weekly home
but later on it was opened to the public
as a museum

Design principle
• The design of Falling water should come
from the site like flower growing from the
ground.

• The quality and nature of materials are

seen „flowing or growing.
Design Construction

It is a three storied cantilevered house

 Terrace seems to float in the air above
the stream
Made use of combination of materials
such as wood, glass & reinforced concrete
Vertical anchor made up of stone rises
more than 3 stories
Vertical anchor consists of windows
starting from floor to ceiling
 The windows are glass framed with steel.
 Horizontals of the cantilevers are made
of reinforced concrete which are
embedded in rocks
 The main level is connected to the stream
via the staircase.

The structure emerges from the fluid

Philosophy
Influenced mainly by nature, art and other
architectural styles.
Used to find art and architecture in nature.
Used to bring various styles seen in nature
along with geometric forms to his design.

Sagrada Familia

Geometrical
forms
Used organic style inspired by nature.
Took various structural and ornamental solutions
from nazarí and mudéjar art.

Colonia Guell Casa Battlo

Then moved towards Modernisme.
Study of nature translated into his use of ruled
geometrical forms such as the hyperbolic
paraboloid, the hyperboloid, the helicoid and
the cone, which reflect the forms Gaudi found in
nature

Conclusions

"Organic Architecture"
brings nature and
structure together
 Importance is given to
both structure as well as
nature.
It helps in reducing the
disturbance caused to the
environment.
 Every structure is unique
& unrepeatable.
