MADE OR BORN?
Who is a Manager?
There large number of people who work at various level and
positions and are basically responsible to get the work done.
Popularly, they are managers.
They perform important work as restaurant manager, finance
manager ,R&D manager, Ship Captain, Chairperson and CEO.
These individuals work may in different types of organization with
different purposes but all of them have one thing in common-they
practice management.
Our society depends upon the goods and services provided by the
organization and these individuals manage.
The manager get authority, accept responsibility, delegate the
power to act, establish accountability and assume leadership within
the organization.
There main function is to make optimum use of both human and
non-human resources.
Who is a Manager?
Every one of use is influenced by the action of
manager day-in and day-out.
It is because we come into contact with the
organization every day.
Our experience may be as customer of a
business, students in a college, patients in a
hospital or citizen of a state.
Our satisfaction largely depends on the
individuals who manage the organization.
All organization are guided and directed by the
decisions of one or more individuals who are
designated as managers.
Importance of Managers
1. Managing limited resources:-The socio-economic and
political structure in the country has posed serious
challenges before the managerial society. It is faced
with industrial crisis as well as social problem within the
framework of the nation’s economy. It is a delicate
problem how best to utilize the country’s limited
productive resources both for the immediate benefit of
the stricken economy as well as for the future corporate
growth. It is now upto the management to adjust its
rationale resources in order to permit a blending of
those two objectives in a smooth pattern. We need a
fresh approach to the management of our economic
problem at both the macro and micro levels.

2. Expectation from managers:-There is
nothing more vital in modern society than
managers. They are planners,
producers, marketers and are the men
who are expected to make things
happen. They are the key figure in the
technical task of the creation of wealth.

3. Keeping pace with changes:-Managers are
responsible for the execution of work performed
by the others. Primarily, they are concerned with
the accomplishment of business objectives. Big
changes are taking place in the social,
economic, political,and technological fields along
with revolution in information technology.These
changes are rapidly influencing our thniking and
manner of dealing with various things. Managers
must view these changes in true perspective and
must make efforts to cope up with them.

4. Service to the Society:-The managers
have become institutional men in society.
With the widening of their outlook on men,
materials and methods, they are totally
changed men. They have come to
recognize that their responsibilities and
obligations go beyond the narrow confines
of the organization they serve and extend
to the society at large.
Characteristics of Managers
Following are the characteristics of
managers:-
1. Managers prefer oral to written
communication.
2. Managers maintain a vast number of contacts,
spending most time with subordinates, linking
them with the superiors and others in a
complex network.
3. Manager prefer like action-breif, specific, well-
defined activities that are current , non-routine
and non-reflective.

They never catch up.
5. Managerial tasks are characterized by
brevity, variety and fragmentation.
6. Much managerial work is initiated by
others. Managers differ enormously in
the extent to which they control their own
density.

business well, the manager is expected to
possess the following skills:
a. Oral and written communication.
b. Decision making
c. Leadership
d. Delegation and control
e. Planning and organizing
f. Information gathering and problem analysis
g. Willingness to lead others
h. Self-objectivity.

2. Motivation to Manage:-Motivation to
manage has seven dimensions:
a. Desire to engage in occupational competition.
b. Desire to assert oneself and take charge.
c. Desire to exercise power and authority over
others.
d. Desire to stand out from the crowd.
e. Desire to engage in games or sports
competition with peers.
f. Sense of responsibility to carry out the routine
duties.

3. Opportunity to Manage:-These are the days of “down-
sizing”. Many firms have introduced golden-handshake
and VRS to their employees. As after-effects of
liberalization looms large, many people are bound to feel
frustrated over the prospect of leading bright carrier in
management jobs. Normal turnover, through deaths,
retirements and carrier changes will open lot many
managerial position in the years ahead. Managers can
have openings in non-profit organization or diversify into
small scale sector as entrepreneur- manager. In spite of
periodic ups and downs in job markets, there will be
regular need for those having right combination of ability
and motivation to manage.

4. Transferable Skills:-However, an
individual who is expert in managing one
activity can transfer his managerial skills to
another activity. The higher on the
managerial scale a manager is, the more
will be he expected to spend his time in
managing. The more expert a manager,
the greater the range of activities he can
manage.

5. Miscellaneous Qualities:-
a. Adaptability to change.
b. Sensitivity to new values.
c. Higher standard of ethics to meet social
values.
d. Skill to deal with conflicting interest groups.
e. New and sophisticated skill in motivating
employees.
f. Confidence and enthusiasm to manage stress.
Functions of a Manager
The Chief Executive Officer delegates powers to
the managers.
The managers have to look after key
administrative tasks in order to relive the top
management of the burden of decision making,
planning and execution.
The manager should be a man of vision and a
master of strategy.
The manager should be “thought man”, “man of
action” and “front man”.
In, practice it is not easy to get person having all
three qualities.
Functions of a Manager
The main functions of manager are:
a. To evaluate the needs of business.
b. To chalk out further plans to benefit the business.
c. To prepare budgets and sanction expenditure on
different tasks.
d. To formulate departmental policies.
e. To ensure effective execution of policies.
f. To exercise control over men and materials.
g. To provide improved results to the management.
h. To make available optimum level of output of goods
and services.
i. To plan short term and long term activities.

There are three roles of manager:-
1. Interpersonal Roles.
2. Informational Roles.
3. Decisional Roles.

a. To raise adequate funds.
b. To attract capital.
c. To make proper allocation of funds.
d. To deal with the complexity of business.
e. To become party to general management.

a. To manage people objectivity.
b. To ensure optimum utilization of human
resources.

Invariably, managers have to put in hard
work.
To succeed in their career, they must have
strong nerves.
They must learn to live with sterss and
tension.

attributes like:
1. Mental:-sharp memory, initive, patience,
presence of mind etc.
2. Physical:-high stamina, sound health,
effective voice etc.
3. Vocational:-leadership qualities,
technical skill, up-to-date knowledge,
public relations etc.

Some of these attributes are found to be
inborn in successful managers.
They can cultivate other attributes from
training and management development
programmers.
Managers today need specialized
knowledge and vision.
Most managers are “made” only few are
“born”.
