Relevance of Renewable Energy

1. Role of Energy in Human Progress

2. Source and Forms of Energy

3. Energy Scenario

4. Renewable Energy Sources

5. Solar Energy
Role of Energy in Human Progress
Until late 18th Century
- Very low almost constant rate of consumption
- Derived mostly from Biomass and animal power
- Low quality of life
7.5%
19th and mid 20th Century
- Very high growth in consumption restricted to industrialized countries
- Derived from Coal, oil and hydro
- Much better quality of life
Late 20th Century and beyond
- Growth in consumption expands globally
- Derived mostly from fossil fuels
- High Technology products & services impacts lifestyle as never before
HUMAN ENERGY CONSUMPTION PATTERN
…OVER THE CENTURIES

Industrial
Revolution

Changed irrevocably
human labor, consumption,
family structure, social
structure, and even the very
soul and thoughts of the
individual.

Energy – the basis of everything

 Energy is crucial and catalytic for economic

growth
 Close relation exists between GDP growth rate and
energy growth rate
 Energy Policy (and foreign) for a country to be guided
by
o Indigenous availability of energy sources
o Technology available to exploit resources
o BOP Position
o Political relationship with Energy exporting
countries
o 25 % of India s energy needs are from Imports

CHALLENGE OF THE 21ST CENTURY

Vehicles
that took us to
Growth
destinations
are now
leading us to
an abyss …
For A Life Woven Around Fossil Fuel…

For every
sector of
activity
atmosphere is
the easy
dumping
ground
Impact 1 - Depletion

At 5% growth rate, our

coal reserves can not
last for >than 86 years

World oil production

likely to peak by 2010-15
and would rapidly decline
thereafter.
CHALLENGE OF THE 21ST CENTURY
The very towers that
proclaimed
wealth and
prosperity to the
human beings
is
turning out to be
Frankenstein
monster
not just for Man but
for all the lives that
inhabit the planet
earth.
EMISSIONS IN 2000
GAS EMISSIONS BY REGIONS IN 2000
Green House Gases
CHALLENGE OF THE 21ST CENTURY

CO2 Concentration
CO2 Emission
RISE IN GREEN HOUSE GAS LEVELS
Impact 2 – Rise in Global Average Temperature
CAUSE:
• Greenhouse gas emission
(NOx, SOx, VOC, PM)
• 1 KWh = 1kg of CO2.
(Note: Water consumption: 3.3 lts / Kwhr)

EFFECTS:
• Ozone hole depletion
• Global warming
• Rising sea levels
• Acid rain
• Contamination of land & water
• Effect on health
• Effect on food chain

• CLIMATE CHANGE !!!

Energy and Pollution…

Energy demand by Sector

• To produce 1 Unit of electricity, we release 1 kg of CO2.

• India produces about 500 billion units of electricity.
• India accounts for 3.5% of greenhouse emission.

And the result apart from melting ice and flooding rivers …

Rising Respiratory Disease

Spread of Tropical diseases spreading to sub-tropical countries
Rising heat stroke deaths
Social conflicts with potential to metamorph into raging wars
and to cap it all

Economic Ruin

(Destruction and loss due to Katrina was a mind boggling 200bn USD)
The Snowballing Conflict

Development Vs. Environment

WHAT ARE THE OPTIONS?
FOR ECONOMIC GROWTH AND TO SUPPORT THE
GROWING POPULATION THERE IS NO ESCAPE FROM
USING FOSSIL FUELS IN THE NEAR FUTURE. BUT WE
NEED TO SEEK NEW SOLUTIONS VERY VERY FAST.

IN THIS CONTEXT
RENEWABLE TECHNOLOGY
REPRESENTS
MANKINDS BEST EFFORT AT A
CLEANER SAFER AND MORE
SUSTAINABLE LIFE
RENEWABLE ENERGY TECHNOLOGIES

Solar Wind

Wave Biomass Geothermal

Renewable Energy…

Definition: Energy from sources that are

‘regenerative’ and for all practical
purposes cannot be depleted.

Examples: Sun, Wind, Hydro-electricity,

Geothermal, Ocean currents, Biomass.

Power generated adds ZERO CARBON

into the atmosphere thus you leave the
Earth a better place… 

Renewable energy = Green Electron !

RENEWABLE ENERGY ADVANTAGES
• No extraction process involved
• No transportation of fuel
• De-centralized generation
• Green energy – no pollution
• Inexhaustible
• Conserves precious natural resources
• Creates more jobs 1000,000W/20W HLS = 50, 000 systems
• Can significantly reduce the % BPL (2bn)
and the attendant social advantages.
Why Solar Energy ...

• Is clean & green

• Not dependent on local conditions – humidity/temp
• No requirement for water
• Fuel is available in abundance for free
• No transportation of fuel – delivered at the site for free

• Develops a responsible image for the owner

• Can be grid/battery connected
• No moving parts therefore negligible maintenance

• RENEWABLES ARE THE FUTURE…

SOLAR TECHNOLOGY
The Power of Sun ...
The Sun in Perspective:
• India’s energy demand is expected to rise
by 9% annually, one of the highest in world.
• At 4-7 kWh/m2 solar insolation we receive
an energy equivalent of 5000 trillion kWh/yr!
• Energy from wood, coal, oil, natural gas or
petrol can be traced to the sun.
• Solar potential: 20MW/sqkm (current 0.8)
India’s energy balance.
Energy of sun can be harnessed for:
• Electricity (Photo-voltaic).
• Heating (Thermal).
*Source: //ireda.nic.in.
Classification ...
• Sun is a massive source of heat and light.
• India receives abundant solar radiation.
• Two distinct solar technologies:

Solar Photo-Voltaic (SPV) Solar Thermal Systems

• Solar Water Heaters.

SPV is the technology that
• Solar Cookers.
converts light into electricity.

• Lighting systems.
• Water pumping.

• Green Power !!!

It is time….
to adopt and campaign for a cleaner and
sustainable world through
Renewable Energy.
