BOND
 The arrangement of bricks or stones in each layer
so as to avoid continuity of vertical joints in any
two adjacent courses both on the face and inside
of a masonary structure is called bond.
BONDING IN BRICK WORK:-
The process of arranging bricks in
different courses in order to tie them
together in unified mass of brickwork
is called bonding in brick work.
PURPOSE
o The purpose of bonding is to ensure that vertical
joint do not come over one another because
brickwork having continuous vertical joints will
not act as columns.
TYPES OF BONDS IN
BRICKWORK
 English bond
 Flemish bond
 Header bond
 Stretcher bond
 Garden wall bond
 English cross bond
 Raking bond
 Monk bond.
 Zig Zag bond.
 ENGLISH BOND
The bond having headers and stretchers
laid in alternate courses is called English
bond.
Some salient features of English
bond:-
 Header and stretcher are laid in alternate courses.

 It is the strongest of all the bonds.
 Continuous vertical joints do not occur on the face as well as
on inside of the structure.
 It provides rough appearance especially for one brick thick
walls.
 Special care is not required in providing this bond.
 Progress of work is more.
 It is costly because use of brick bats is not allowed.
SUITABILITY:-
English bond is commonly adopted for
brickwork of buildings where strength is of
prime importance.
 FLEMISH BOND
The bond having headers and stretchers
laid alternately in the same course is
called Flemish bond.
Some salient features of Flemish
bond:-
Headers and stretchers are laid alternately in the same

course.
Not such a strong as English bond.

It is used on walls one brick thick.

Every header in each course lies centrally over every

stretcher of the underlying course.
This type of bond provides good appearance.

It is less strong for walls having thickness more than

300mm.
There are partly continuous vertical joints in the structure

built in this bond.
Special care is required in providing this bond.

It is economical because brick bats are to be used for

providing this bond.
 HEADER BOND
The bond having all the bricks laid as
headers in every course of a wall is called
header bond.
 In this type of bond ¾ bats are laid as Quoin bricks
in the alternate courses to break the continuity of
vertical joints.
USE OF HEADER BOND:-
 This type of bond is commonly used for constructing

brickwork of wells, footings, corbels, etc.
 STRETCHER BOND:-
The bond having all the bricks laid as
stretchers in every course is called
stretcher bond.
 In this type of bond every alternate course is to be
started with ½ bats for breaking the continuity of
vertical joints.
SUITABILITY:-
This type of bond is commonly used for constructing
10cm thick partition walls.
 GARDEN WALL BOND:-
The bond used for constructing compound walls
of a garden is called Garden wall bond.
This bond is also known as boundary wall bond.

The thickness of wall is one brick, Sometimes this
bond is preferably used for constructing outer
leaves of cavity walls to provide good appearance.
 RAKING BOND:-
The bond having all the bricks laid at an angle
to the facing and backing of a wall is called
Raking bond.
 In this bond, the angle of rake is so adjusted as to lay
maximum number of full bricks across the wall. The
inclination should be in opposite direction in
alternate courses of the raking bond.
 The angle of rake b/w the alternate courses should
be 90 to attain maximum transverse strength.
RAKING BOND:-
 ENGLISH CROSS BOND:-
The bond having headers and stretcher laid in
alternate courses and a header provide after the quoin
stretcher, in every alternate stretching course is called
English cross bond.
 This bond is similar to English bond.
 This bond is also Known as Andrews cross bond.
SUITABILITY:-
 This type of bond is used for brickwork where both
strength and appearance are required but it is not
very common in brick masonary.
 ZIG ZAG BOND:-
The bond having bricks laid in zig zag fashion is called
Zig Zag bond.
This type of bond is commonly used for paving the
brick floors. & for the decorative purpose.
 MONK BOND:-
The bond having two stretchers and one header laid
alternately in each course is called monk bond.
This type of bond is used in the construction of
boundary walls, where the bricks of inferior quality are
to be used.
