    URBAN

    SPACES
    In 2011, at 23rd session of the governing council of UN- habitat, member states
    mandated UN-habitat to consolidate agency wide work on public space, to
    develop and promote public space policy.

    One of the proposed


    targets set out is, “by
    2030, provide universal
    access to safe and
    accessible green and
    public spaces,
    particularly for
    children and women,
    older persons and
    persons with
    disabilities.”
     Character of city defined by – streets and public spaces.
     Public space takes spatial forms like, parks, streets,
    sidewalks that connect playground of recreational
    places and also edge space between buildings which are
    important for urban poor.
     Beaches are also public space.
     Public space are not open spaces- a library, as school
    are also public spaces.
     public space can operate ceremonial fests, movement of
    goods and people, livelihood of urban poor like, street
    vendor or waste pickers.
    Characteristics of great public space include;

    - Promotes human contact and social activities.


    - Safe, welcoming and accommodating for all users.
    - Has design and architectural features for visual interest.
    - Promotes community involvement.
    - Reflects local culture or history.
    - Is well maintained.
    - Has a unique or special character.

    It is important to prepare guidelines for the design of successful
    squares, chowks, market places and plazas, streets.

     Site and form of public space.


     Design and location of entrances to public place.
     Pattern of land use around public place and in the
    vicinity.
     Streetscape and landscape design features.
     Design for hospitality and comfort.
     Public space management.
     Balance of transportation modes in and around the
    square.
