Analysis of the Kartilya
• Similar to what we have done to the accounts o
f Pigafetta, this primary source also needs to be
analyzed in terms of content and context. As a
document written for a fraternity whose main
purpose is to overthrow a colonial regime,we c
an explain the content and provisions of the ka
rtilya as a reaction and response to a certain val
ue systems they found despicable in the presen
t state of things that they struggled against wit
h.
Moreover, one can analyze th
e values upheld in the docume
nt as a consistent with the bur
geoning rational and liberal id
eas in the eighteenth and nine
teenth century.
• Equality, tolerance, freedom,
and liberty were values that
first emerged in the eighteenth
century.
• Kartilya repeatedly emphasized
the importance of honor in wor
ds and in action.
• The teaching of the katipunan on
how women should be treated
with honor and respect, while po
stive in many respects and certai
nly a significant
stride from the practice of raping and
physically abusing women, can still b
e telling of the katipunan' secondary r
egard for women in relation to men.
• Aside from this, the kartilya was instr
uctive not just of the katipuna's cond
uct toward other people, but also for
the member's development as individ
uals in their own rights.
• General speaking, the rules in the kart
ilya can be classified as either directe
d to how one how should treat his or
her neighbor or how one should deve
lop and conduct one's self.
• All in all, proper reading of the kart
ilya will reveal a more thorough und
erstanding of the katipunan and the
significant role that it played in the r
evolution and in the unfolding of th
e Philippine history as we know it.
