PERMUTATION WITH
REPETITION
 A permutation of a set of objects is an ordering of those
objects. When some of those objects are identical, the
situation is transformed into a problem about permutations
with repetition.
 In general, repetitions are taken care of by dividing
the permutation by the factorial of the number of objects that
are identical.
FORMULA WHER
S: E:
n P = stands for Permutation
 nPr = nr formula
r
n = number of total items

 nPr = or r = items taken for the
permutation
x = number of item/s
repeated
EXAMPLE
1:
P
n r = nr

How many 3 letter words with or without meaning can

be formed out of the letters of the word SMOKE when
repetition of words is allowed?
SOLUTIO
N: The number of objects is 5, as the word SMOKE has 5
alphabets, and r = 3, as 3-letter word has to be chosen.

P
n r = nr

= 53
nPr = 125

There are 125 3-letter word arrangements that can be formed

from the word SMOKE.
EXAMPLE SOLUTIO
2: N:   P =
n r

How many different 5-letter =

=
arrangements can be formed =
from the word APPLE? nPr = 60

Given:
n= 5 x= 2 (2 P’s) There are 60 5-letter arrangements that
can be formed from the word APPLE.
r= 5
PERMUTATION WITHOUT
REPETITION
 Permutations without repetition of n elements are the
different groups n elements that can be done, so that
two groups differ from each other only in the order
the elements are placed.

Example: Let us consider the set A={ a,b,c,d,e}. Then

the permutations of these 5 elements are : abcde, acbde,
dbeca,…

that can be selected
𝑟 = number of item that were
selected
