Geotechnical Engineering - Course Outline

This course covers fundamentals of geotechnical engineering including soil compressibility, shear strength, triaxial tests, settlement, lateral earth pressure, bearing capacity, and slope stability. The course objectives are to understand soil compressibility, effective stress concepts, and how vertical and horizontal stresses affect structures. Topics include compressibility, shear strength, lateral earth pressure theories, slope stability, and shallow and pile foundations. Student work includes assignments, quizzes, exams, and a handwritten compilation of all coursework. Grades are based on participation, assignments, quizzes, and exams.

:Course Description

This course deals with the

fundamentals of geotechnical
engineering that includes
compressibility of soil, shear
strength of soils, triaxial tests of
soils, settlement, lateral earth
pressure, soil bearing capacity and
slope stability of soils.
:Course Outcomes
At the end of the course, the students
must be able to:

1. Understand the principles of soil

compressibility as applied to different
types of soil profiles.
:Course Outcomes
2. Discuss the procedures on how to
solve problems regarding the effective
stress concepts that include vertical
stress on a point below the ground
surface, subsurface stress below water
surface and other different current
conditions of soil.
:Course Outcomes
3. Analyze the effects of vertical and
horizontal stresses of soil on the
structure that is to be constructed at a
depth below the ground surface.
4. Calculate the magnitude of the
lateral earth pressure that can be
produced on soil using the Rankine
and Coulomb’s theories.
