:Course Description
This course deals with the
fundamentals of geotechnical engineering that includes compressibility of soil, shear strength of soils, triaxial tests of soils, settlement, lateral earth pressure, soil bearing capacity and slope stability of soils. :Course Outcomes At the end of the course, the students must be able to:
1. Understand the principles of soil
compressibility as applied to different types of soil profiles. :Course Outcomes 2. Discuss the procedures on how to solve problems regarding the effective stress concepts that include vertical stress on a point below the ground surface, subsurface stress below water surface and other different current conditions of soil. :Course Outcomes 3. Analyze the effects of vertical and horizontal stresses of soil on the structure that is to be constructed at a depth below the ground surface. 4. Calculate the magnitude of the lateral earth pressure that can be produced on soil using the Rankine and Coulomb’s theories. Topic Outline I. Compressibility of Soils A. Elastic Settlement and Primary Consolidation Settlement B. Time rate of settlements C. Settlement beneath the footing II. Shear Strength of Soils A. Introduction to Shear Strength and Direct Shear Test B. Triaxial Shear Test C. Vane Shear Test Topic Outline III. Lateral Earth Pressure: At Rest, Rankine and Coulomb IV. Lateral Earth Pressure: Curved Failure Surface V. Slope Stability of Soils VI. Soil Bearing Capacity for Shallow Foundations VII. Pile Foundations Grading System Term Grade Class Participation: (50+Ave/2) × 10% Activity/Ass./Plate: (50+Ave/2) × 20% Quiz: (50+Ave/2) × 30% Major Exam: (50+Score/2) × 40% TOTAL: 100% COURSE REQUIREMENTS (ONLINE/MODULAR CLASS) Weekly Assignment/Activity/Plates There will be a total of 5 assignments per term which aim to enrich your understanding of the topics recently discussed in class. These assignments may involve problem solving/research. Quizzes There are two quizzes, 100 pts. each that you have to take per term. The types of test in the quiz may vary to asses different levels of learning. Major Exam You will take 3 major exams for this semester (labeled as Prelim Exam, Midterm Exam and Final Exam). Before taking any major exam, you have to secure an exam permit first. COURSE REQUIREMENTS (ONLINE/MODULAR CLASS) Semestral Project Handwritten Compilation of all activities, quizzes and major exam Requirements: 1.Ring bind/Book bind 2.Handwritten (Engineering Lettering) 3.1 inch border 4.Problem No. then Problem Statement before Solution. 5.Multiple problems can be written in one page.
