Lesson 5: Basic Facts of Multiplication: Mathematics 4

Multiplication is a repeated addition. It involves factors and results in a product. There are properties that govern multiplication, including: 1) The commutative property states that changing the order of factors does not change the product. 2) The identity property is that any number multiplied by 1 equals that number. 3) The zero property is that any number multiplied by 0 equals 0. 4) The associative property allows changing the grouping of factors without changing the product. 5) The distributive property means that multiplying or subtracting a factor that is a sum or difference does not change the product.

LESSON 5:

BASIC FACTS OF
MULTIPLICATION
Mathematics 4
Let us have this…
• There are 4 rows of trees. There are 8 trees in each row.
How many trees are there in all?
• To get the total number of trees, we can add 8 +
8 + 8 + 8 = 32. There are 32 trees in all.
• We can also use multiplication since the addends
are the same. Four rows of 8 tress are 32 trees in
all; 4 x 8 = 32. In the same way, 8 columns of four
trees make 32 trees; 8 x 4 = 32.
Multiplication
 it is a repeated addition.

8 + 8 + 8 + 8 = 32
4 x 8 = 32
Terms used in Multiplication
In 4 x 8 = 32,
4 is called multiplicand,
8 is called multiplier,
4 and 8 are also called factors, and
12 is called product.
Factors
are the numbers we multiply.

Product
 the answer in multiplication.
Properties of Multiplication
• Commutative Property
- changing the order of the factors does not affect the
product

Illustrative Example:
8 x 6 and 6 x 8 will result to the same product.
8 x 6 = 48
6 x 8 = 48
5 x 6 and 6 x 5 will result to the same product.
5 x 6 = 30
6 x 5 = 30
Properties of Multiplication
• Identity Property
- any number multiplied to 1 will always give
that number.

Illustrative Example:
8 x 1 will always be 8.
8x1=8
6 x 1 will always be 6.
6x1=6
Properties of Multiplication
• Zero Property
- any number multiplied by 0 will always be 0.

Illustrative Example:
6 x 0 will always be 0.
6x0=0
5 x 0 will always be 0.
5x0=0
Properties of Multiplication
• Associative Property
- when there are three or more factors, you can
change the grouping of the factors.

Illustrative Example:
5 x ( 4 x 3 ) and ( 5 x 4 ) x 3will have the same product.
5 x ( 4 x 3 ) = 5 x 12 = 60;
( 5 x 4 ) x 3 = 20 x 3 = 60
Properties of Multiplication
• Distributive Property
- if one factor is a sum or a difference,
multiplying or subtracting will not change the
product.

Illustrative Example:
6 x ( 7 + 3 ) and ( 6 x 7 ) + ( 6 x 3 )
will have the same product.

6 x ( 7 + 3 ) = 6 x 10 = 60
( 6 x 7 ) + ( 6 x 3 ) = 42 + 18 = 60
