Lesson 3 - Patterns Ans Number Sequences

The document provides a lesson on patterns and number sequences. It defines a number pattern as a sequence that grows or repeats according to a specific rule. To find the rule, one looks for patterns by going through the different operations. Examples are given to demonstrate finding the pattern/rule and determining the next number in a sequence. An exercise then tests identifying whether a set has a pattern and completing number patterns or sequences.

Lesson 3: Patterns and Number Sequences

Objectives:
a. To determine the pattern of a given sequence and state the rule
b. To complete a number pattern or sequence
c. To give or state real example or application of the lesson.

Patterns
A numbers pattern is a sequence of numbers that grows or repeats according to a specific
rule. To find the rule, go through the different operations to check for a pattern.

Example:
1.) Look at the sequence; 0, 2, 4, 6 , _?_
What do you think is the next number?

Observe the sequence. From 0, he number is growing by 2, or simply; 0 + 2 = 2. So we could say

that the pattern or rule is by adding 2 to all the succeeding numbers.
0+2=2
2+2=4
4+2=6
6+2=8
Therefore, the next number after 6 is 8.

2.) Observe the sequence: 5, 8, 11, 14, ? .

What do you think is the next number?
The number is growing by 3, so the pattern or rule must be;
5+3=8
8 + 3 = 11
11 + 3 = 14
14 + 3 = 17
Therefore, the next number after 14 is 17.
