1) The document provides guidelines for surveys of bulk carriers, including definitions of key terms like representative spaces, suspect areas, and substantial corrosion.
2) It describes coating condition and critical structural areas that require monitoring and outlines factors that identify them like calculations, service history, or cracking patterns.
3) The final section defines common survey types and key parties like surveyors who perform inspections of ships and cargo.

Module 2 - EC017 - SHIP SURVEY AND
VETTING INSPECTION GUIDELINESON THE ENHANCED PROGRAMME OF INSPECTIONS DURING SURVEYS OF BULK CARRIER Representative spaces
Representative spaces are those which are expected to
reflect the condition of other spaces of similar type and service and with similar corrosion prevention systems. When selecting representative spaces account should be taken of the service and repair history on board and identifiable critical and/or suspect areas. Suspect areas
Suspect areas are locations
showing substantial corrosion and/or are considered by the surveyor to be prone to rapid wastage. Locations showing substantial corrosion and/or are considered to be prone to rapid wastage. Suspect Area Substantial Corrosion Substantial Corrosion - An extent of corrosion such that assessment of corrosion pattern indicates wastage in excess of 75% of allowable corrosion, but within allowable corrosion limits. Corrosion prevention system is normally considered either: 1). A full hard coating supplemented by anodes; 2). A full hard coating.
Other coating systems (e.g. soft coating) may be
considered acceptable as alternatives provided that they are applied and maintained in compliance with the manufacturers specification. Solution to Corrosion Anti-fouling paint
Anti-fouling paint - a category of commercially available
underwater hull paints (also known as bottom paints) - is a specialized category of coatings applied as the outer (outboard) layer to the hull of a ship or boat, to slow the growth and/or facilitate detachment of subaquatic organisms that attach to the hull and can affect a vessel's performance and durability. Cleaning the Ship’s Bottom Painted the Ship Bottom Coating condition is defined as follows:
GOOD condition with only minor spot rusting;
FAIR condition with local breakdown of coating at edges of stiffeners and weld connections and/or light rusting over 20% or more of areas under consideration, but less than as defined for poor condition; POOR condition with general breakdown of coating over 20% or more of areas or hard scale at 10% or more of areas under consideration. Critical structural areas
Critical structural areas are locations which have been
identified from calculations to require monitoring or from the service history of the subject ship or from similar or sister ships to be sensitive to cracking, buckling or corrosion which would impair the structural integrity of the ship Critical structural areas Cargo length area is that part of the ship which includes all cargo holds and adjacent areas including fuel tanks, cofferdams, ballast tanks and void spaces. Cargo length area Definition of Terms
Survey: A critical examination or inspection of a vessel, cargo, or
marine structure for the purpose of ascertaining desired facts and conclusions when necessary. Survey, Condition: A survey that determines in some detail the specific condition of a vessel or of cargo; usually performed at the commencement or termination of charters or voyages for the agreed mutual benefit of various parties. Definition of Terms
Survey, Valuation: A survey that determines the current
market value and may also express replacement value. Surveyor (Marine Surveyor): A qualified marine inspector who performs surveys / inspects a ship hull or its cargo for damage or quality.
Definition of Terms
Survey, Damage: A survey that determines the exact extent of
damages incurred and specifies repair requirements Survey Report: The written evidence of the survey. Survey, Suitability: A survey that determines whether a vessel and its equipment are capable of adequately and safely performing an intended task. SURVEY PROGRAM
