TITLE OF EXPERIMENT - IMPACT OF JET ON VANE

Submitted by -Batch No-11

Laboratory –in-charge Section:Civil B
Mrs. Bharti Prasad, Asst Professor Name:Vinyas.N.Swamy(1NT19CV088)
Overview

Aim of the Instrument/Apparatus Detailed Procedure as per code of Observation & Tabulation
Experiment Used reference

Aim of the Experiment
DETERMINATION OF VANE COEFFICIENTS FOR A FLAT VANE
& SEMI-CIRCULAR VANE
APPARSTUS
•A nozzle of known diameter
•A vane on which the water jet can impinge
•A device for measuring the force of the jet on a flat
plate (weighing balance of 1 kg capacity)
•A pumping device to supply water to the jet with a
control valve.
•Rotameter to measure the flow rate (0 to 50 lpm)
PROCEDURE
• Open the front acrylic door and fill clean & soft water into the tank approximately up to ¾ of its full level

• Keep the bypass valve & Rotameter valve open

• Fix the desired jet & vane in position, close the acrylic door and lock. Level the fulcrum to horizontal position by adjusting the
counter weight such that the adjustable Knob just touches the weighing scale top surface (this is to be repeated for each vane)
and make the weighing scale to read Zero by adjusting, the Zero Adjustable Knob located on top of the weighing scale

• Connect the equipment to the electrical power source and switch ‘ON’ the pump.

• Now the pump starts and pumps water back to the tank through by pass line

• Gradually close the bypass valve until the pressure gauge reads 0.5 Kg / Cm2
• Note the Rotameter reading and weighing scale reading and record

• Gradually increase the pressure to 1 Kg / Cm2 , 1.5 Kg / Cm2 , and so on until the bypass valve is fully closed

• Note and record the readings at each step

• Change the vane and repeat experiment with the same jet

• Change the jet and repeat the experiment for all the three vanes

• Tabulate all the readings and calculate the theoretical force exerted on the vane in each case and compare with the actual force exerted in the
vane indicated by the weighing scale

• Calculate co-efficient of impact (CI) in each case.

• In case the equipment is to be kept idle for a long time it is desired to keep the tank clean and dry by draining all the water from the tank and
wipe it dry.
Observation & Tabulation
  • Diameter of the nozzle (Jet) = 6 mm, 8 mm, 10mm.
• Cross section area of jet = d2/4 m^2.
• Cross section area of Jet = 2.8 x 10^ -5 m^2 ,5 x 10^-5
m^2 ,7.8 x 10^-5 m^2 .
• Height of the impact point above the nozzle tip = 50 mm
(approx.) .
CALCULATIONS

• Theoretical force
• On Flat vane FTH = (W a v^2)/g Kg
Where ,w = 1000 Kg / m^3
g = 9.81 m / sec^2
a = area of the jet in m2
d = dia of the jet in mts
v = Velocity = Q/a m/sec
Q = (Rotameter reading) LPM / (1000 X 60) m^3 /sec
• On Hemispherical vane Fth =( 2 W a v ^2)/g Kg
RESULT

1. The co-efficient of impact on flat vane is ________.

2. The co-efficient of impact on hemispherical vane is ________.
