Lesson 3 - Visualizing Multiplication of Fractions Using Models

1) Mr. Carlos has a 3/4 hectare piece of land and planted 1/3 of it with vegetables. 2) A diagram shows how to visualize 1/3 of 3/4 by dividing a rectangle representing 1 hectare into 12 equal parts, with 3 parts shaded twice to represent the portion planted. 3) The document explains that 1/3 of 3/4 is equal to 3/12, so the part of Mr. Carlos' land planted with vegetables is 3/12 hectares.

Visualizing Multiplication of

Fractions Using Models

LESSON 3
Mr. Carlos has a ¾ hectare piece of land. He planted 1/3
of it with What part of his land was planted with
vegetables?
• To solve the word problem. Look at the drawing below and
imagine (visualize) how 1/3 of ¾ looks like.

If this rectangle represents 1 hectare, the shaded part represents the

piece of land of Mr. Carlos.

If this rectangle represents the land, shaded part represents 1/3 which will be

planted with vegetables.
Mr. Carlos has a ¾ hectare piece of land. He planted 1/3
of it with What part of his land was planted with
vegetables?

If 1/3 will overlap to ¾ notice

that the rectangle has been divided
into 12 equal parts already and 3
parts or 3/12 of it is shaded twice,
therefore 1/3 of ¾ is equal to 3/12
and that represents the land
planted with.
