INTRODUCTION
Wind energy is energy collected from motion
caused by heavy winds.

It is collected in turbines when the wind blows .

It is a clean.

It is  renewable energy  source that is abundant in windy

areas.
Brazos Wind Farm , Texas
HISTORY
Wind power being used since 5,500 years ago.

In 1887, Charles. F. Brush lighted his home home first by

wind power machine.

In 1890’s small wind turbines were built by scientist and

inventor Paul La Core for electricity generation.

In 1979, modern wind power industry began.

Since then their sixe has increased from 20 KW to present day

7 MW .
WIND ENERGY
The earth’s differential heating drives a global
atmospheric convection system .

Most of the energy stored in these wind movements

can be found at high altitudes .

 Different locations will have different wind speed

distributions.

A wind farm is a group of wind turbines in the same
location used for production of electric power.
 A large wind farm may consist of several hundred
individual wind turbines
The land between the turbines may be used for
agricultural or other purposes.
Many of the largest operational onshore wind farms
are located in the US.
•  The Roscoe Wind Farm is the largest onshore wind
farm in the world at 781.5 MW
WIND ENERGY USAGE
Worldwide there are now many thousands of wind
turbines operating, with a total capacity of
194,400 MW.

World wind generation capacity more than quadrupled

between 2000 and 2006.

Wind power industry affected by global financial

crisis .
TOP 10 COUNTRIES BY WINDPOWER
CAPACITY (2010)
COUNTRY WIND POWER CAPACITY (MW)

CHINA 44,733
UNITED STATES 40,180
GERMANY 27,215
SPAIN 20,676
INDIA 13,066
ITALY 5,797
FRANCE 5,660
UNITED KINGDOM 5,204
CANADA 4,008
DENMARK 3,734
OFFSHORE WIND POWER
Refers to wind farms in bodies of water.

Better wind speed is available.

Contribution to electricity supplied is higher.

Only drawback is the high installation cost.

ELECTRICITY GENERATION FACTORS
Each turbine is inteconnected to medium
voltage(34.5KV) power collection system .
Grid management to be carried using more improved
machines apart from induction generators.
Present capacity factor is usually between 20-35% .
Very few grid system is found to have penetration of
more than 5% .
Electricity generation also depends on variability of
seasons or throughout the day.
ECONOMICS
Negligible fuel cost
High installation capacity cost
Estimated energy cost at 40p per KW-h consumed is
comparatively lesser than traditional sorces.
ENVIRONMENTAL EFFECTS
Environmental impact is minor.

It consumes no fuel , so no air pollution.

 Agriculture is posssible at wind farms.

Bird and bat mortalities are high at some specific locations.

There is anecdotal report of noise pollution which review

board has denied .

RESEARCH AND
DEVELOPMENT
Despite growing demands , technology is not

optimized .
This sector needs a drastic transformation according to

international reseach bodies.

Needs new ways to engage the public in appreciating

the technology.
Development possible only if people accepts.
CONCLUSION
Government should play a major role in extracting

wind energy.
People’s awakement required.

Debates on development to be carried out openly.

Public need to accept this form of energy source.

 UNO should encourage its development to

member countries.
